I took my family to the Chicagoland area this weekend.
While my wife attended a show with psychics Sylvia Brown and John Holland in Rosemont, my son and I found two aquarium shops that advertise in Aquarium Fish Magazine.
The first shop was Living Sea Aquarium in Park Ridge on Devon Ave. Its a large shop that features freshwater, marine, reef, and pond livestock. The shop posted reasonable prices for the Chicagoland area and had very clean tanks and healthy stock. They had a large inventory of corals and marine fish. The overall presentation of the livestock was very good. The shop has two large pools. One contains rays, the other sharks and tarpon. They had a feeding at 2:00 PM. They allowed the kids and adults to hand feed squid to the rays (my son and I really enjoyed this). Just after that they allowed the kids to feed the sharks and tarpon (this was done with large tongs, my son enjoyed this to). This shop is worth the visit if you are in the area.
An A+++ in my book
The second shop was Advanced Aquatics in Schaumberg just off of Roselle Road. This shop only features marine and reef stock. It had a very large inventory of corals, however many of the species you can find locally. The prices were a bit higher at this shop. The store was clean, well organized, with good presentation. However, a few if the tanks did exhibit some algae issues, but this was limited to a small number of tanks in the back of the store. Overall another shop worth a look. A B+++ in my book
I was not able to find the corals I was looking for, but my son and I had fun just the same. I also found out about 3 more stores in the Schaumberg area I intend to check out the next time we are in the area.
Just wanted to share this with you.
