Aquarium wiring cabinet... any thoughts?

Got tubes?
Hi all!

Ok, so... with my new RKE on its way as of today, I am wanting to clean up my wiring on my tank. :)

I am thinking it would probably be a good idea to get all of my wiring and what not away from my tank a little bit. I don't have much room, but I'm thinking maybe a thin (maybe 6" deep?) cabinet may do the trick.

Does anyone have any thoughts? I really have VERY little room, so something that is maybe 24"x24"x8" or so is what I'm thinking may be awesome.

Does anyone have any ideas? I know some of you are carpenters in your own right... maybe you can share some insight of something that would be somewhat low-profile and possibly hang on the wall (so not too terribly heavy).

Many thanks! I'm now going to go cruise around and see what all I can find. :)

That has always been one of my down falls..... I can never seem to get all my wires organized. I think it is an art like aquascaping

So you are doing the RKE? I am going to wait and prob get the APEX... Looks real nice, I liked my AC3 alot. Also like the iphone app for the APEX.

I do like the seperate cabinet idea. That would be the way to go.

Apex, iPhone... next you'll be using Macs. :p :D

Or maybe you'll ride the fence in a very awkward way... ;)

Anyway, I'm thinking a cabinet will be the way to go, too. I'm thinking specifically if I go the pre-fabricated route, a simple bathroom cabinet may be a way to go. We'll see.

i think i'm gonna like the way i'm doing mine in the stand :)

cut a small piece of wood to go at the top between the front rail & center rail. left it open behind the dj strips & the excess wires will tuck up in the lil cubbyhole at the top

the side stand in the link was truly pimp-tastic. you'd need something like that cause i seem to remember your stand barely having room for AIR in it LOL

 You're right... I do barely have room for air. :)

You know, I may just incorporate something more simple into the back of the canopy. That would probably mean skipping the American DJ strip, tho... but that's ok.

I need to go look at some rack units. I saw a guy who mounted all of his stuff right under his American DJ strip on blank rack panels... and believe me... I've fabricated quite a few rack panels. :D

You should share some pics of your wiring, James. ;)

I had this conversation with the wife last night about moving all the electrical out of the main stand to a side stand.

We have a white cabinet that is in the kitchen that we kinda use as a pantry. its 6' tall, 12" deep, about 2' wide, and just "fits" the kitchen.

So we are going to get a similar one put it next to the tank, and shove TopOff water, and all the electrical in it, and since the Tank is in the area between the kitchen and the Living room, it will just fit in.

Thats the theory at least :D

Only Hackintosh for me .... I saw you playing with a mac also ;)

I do like the RKE also. Still gonna be a little while till I decide anyway. I will let you beta it for me first :D

I hope your theory works out, Mnemic. :)

My RKE comes in tomorrow, Rick. You'll have to come over before the next studio date/time to check it out. :)

not much wiring to show yet, but my LED moonlight/t5 shimmer supplementation wiring can be seen in the DIY LEDs thread. only "wiring" i'll have really will be all the electrical cords & since they'll all be plugged into the dj strips, having the lil cubby hole behind & above them will give a nice place to shove all the excess....my version of sweeping dirt under the rug LOL

i personally like having (2) 4-switch versions of the dj switches over a single 8-switch to be able to seperate the tank between 2 GFCIs....which i am gonna put in the stand. have 1 of the outdoor electrical boxes i've installed in the upper corner of the stand. it will have 2 GFCIs & power coming into it will be a heavy-duty replacement cord from lowes (basically an extension cord w/ the plug end cut off & bare wires). then the dj strips will plug into each GFCI

the dj strips are well worth doing & not expensive. amazon has them w/ free shipping :)

8-switch
4-switch

amazon must be out of them in their personal stock (that they offer free shipping on)....so look at other online vendors i guess.....didn't notice they were outta stock, but doesn't surprise me as that is THE cheapest price online when shipping is considered

seems that several sites i checked didn't have any.....but here are a few:

Sweet... thanks for the heads-up on that 4 outlet version, James... two of those would be easier to customize to the stand and its the same price, too. :)

Many thanks, Bill. I may very well take you up on that! I would need your expertise in addition to your tools. ;) I'm just looking to build something simple, but something that doesn't look like painted plywood, if you know what I mean. :)

actually....(2) of those are a penny cheaper than (1) 8-switch HAHAHA

amazon appears to be out of the 4-switch version as well, but look around online to see what you can find....it's not as popular as the 8-switch so finding it might be a bit more difficult
