Aquatech 100 filter or skimmer?

I bought a tank used from a gentleman and he had a reef tank with fish and was running a aquatech filter (which I got when I bought the tank). I am curious as to for a 40 gallon breeder, which is going to start as a fish with live rock, then transition to a coral what would be better, and why?

I used a skimmer and a hang on filter. The filter is a great place to run GFO.

What is the benefit of having a skimmer? I have read all these posts and different articles and to me it seems like the same thing as a pump.
