Aquatic Marine Coral Sale

Some of the stores are really expensive, especially with the nicer corals. I'm not trying to complain about somebody making a profit, but for some of the stuff I've seen at one of the LFS's, they wanted $19 per polyp.

The frag swap is a great idea. I hope to get some good deals on some stuff, and then be able to repay the favor and help the club once my tank gets to the point I'm trimming stuff back.

you can get some great deals at the swaps...especially towards the end. nobody wants to take their leftover frags home! :)

where are you from? have you been playing with saltwater long?

I'm in Karns. I've not been into saltwater long at all, about a month now. I did freshwater for about 10 years though, so it doesn't seem to be much of a change, other than having much more variety of livestock available. I plan to go to one of the swaps. The next one is still 3 months out. How often do the swaps usually take place?

i dunno...i think there is a good bit of difference...especially if you're keeping corals!

we do ours once a year, then chattanooga does one i believe in september? and nashville does theirs in january i think. its a good time. we're working on getting some pretty great sponsors and vendors!

Most things are the same (FW compared to SW) except that with SW you can feasibly use a skimmer to get rid of the fish poop -- and you need to top off with fresh water regularly. I always use an auto top-off to make things easier and more regular. With some corals, there are special measures you need to take to keep them alive, but I honestly think that high-growth FW planted tanks are more expensive to setup and harder to maintain than an SPS tank (but you'll pay more for a tank full of SPS corals and frags).

If you can't wait until a frag swap, just post here what you are looking for. Quite a few members sell or trade frags.

The swaps are usually held by the different clubs on a annual basis. We hold ours in June. The Middle TN club (Nashville) is in January. The one held by the Chattanooga club is usually at the end of the Summer. Those are the three that are the closest that I know of.

By the way, we do not use this or the other forum to discuss local fish stores. We have a private forum, for club members, in which good and bad experiences can be shared. RC has a site for vendor comments. You may a find a place there for negative comments.

The problem with negative comments, well now that I think of it even positive comments, can be invalid. Once they are posted, they are there for the world to see "“ good, bad, true, false.:sad2:

Some good and some bad get though, however.:)

Eddie, I had a comments section under the Local Fish Stores page on the website. My intent was so people can express their opinions at the bottom of the page. I know when people visit the knoxville area, they would like to know about which stores to go to and why. I have always faced this problem on choosing which stores to go to when I'm at a different city. I thought by including this, it would be easier for out-of-towners to see and get suggestions. But you are right and the comments posted there will be public, positive or negative. Do you think we should disable that comments section?

Nope, we should leave it the way it is and hope people can ---- "œbehave themselves in public". :spin2:

I was just trying to make a suggestion, actually -- not trying to set policy or bully someone. Hopefully it did not come across that way. If it did, I apologize. :)

I have heard positive and negative things about every LFS in town. That does not make them all good and bad. I would say join the club come to several of the meetings ask questions. Those that have experiences with the different LFS are usually willing to share their experiences good or bad. Then if you still have questions or there seems to be conflicting stories come to me and ask. I know everything about nothing. :wavehand:

Yeah, it's more or less for the out of townees. I'm sure people in town already have their formed opinions. I went to Atlanta 2 weeks ago, and haven't been to their stores in a while. They have so many, I didn't know which was worth going to.
