Aquatic World, Oconomowoc, WI closing? Good deals maybe?

If I remember correctly, Jim himself is the one that told me that story when I went in there looking for a 180. At any rate, he had great prices on tanks and it's sad to see it go out like this.

Aquatic World used to get all their custom tanks from General Pet (behind Minor's Garden Center). So anyone who orders from General CAN get custom from them. I wouldnt get Great Lakes Aquariums for a Reef Tank though... not enough safety factor, and I dont think they do custom, just odd sizes (like 48x18x12h). I know Hoffer's uses General, but $$$, but some others can as well... say... Glass Aqutics should be able to do custom for you (he can get through General).

If all glass will make it I can get it through my supplier. I'm me whith what you need and I should be able to get you a price and a time line on it. The other option is Oceanic however I have not done business with them in over 2 years so I'm not sure if I can still get tanks from them unless it is a big order.

Was just at Aquatic World today...whole place going under, everything is really, really picked thru, but I would suggest any of you still interested in things they have to go in next day or so. Apparently the legal/bank kinds of assessors are coming later this week. Don't know what it will be like after that. They still have some tanks, stands, lots of other misc stuff too. I grabbed timer, air pump, and CF light.

Happy shopping! -Matt

That is interesting. I had heard of other places going down and falling behind on there bills. In those cases the sherrifs came in and padlocked the place for the bank. Then the bank brought in a auctioneer. If after the auction there was money left beyound what was owed the bank it was returned to the owner.

Having talked to one individual that wemnt through this it was a bloody mess. He first had to appear in court where the sherifs notice was simply read. In about two hours the place was locked up he could not even get his personal effects.

Then when they had the acution it only took about 2 hours. They tried to sell everything in large lots and got roughly .20 on the dollar of whole prices. Then the auctionare took 30% out of that as his commission.

When I had my store I had gone to several of these auctions. Good deals but you have to buy in large lots and sometimes half the lot is garbage, but you still have to take it.

An example was a lot of tanks I bought for $400 that included 60 tanks between 30 and 45gallons each. Only 20 ended up being salvagable for fish but another 15 were salvagable for land based creatures.

Usualy in these situations the owners know what is comming. Therefore they either sell at a discount as much as they can or move them to another location before the sherif gets there.

When I closed shop I was fighting my land lord that gave me a date to get out. So it was a different situation. I was able to pull what I wanted, set minimium prices on some items, and not sell other items in the store. However the auctionare ended up getting more money than I did. He charged an advertising fee, plus labor for the 20 people he brought with him, and then took a commision on top of that.

This is the same old story I have heard from A.W. several times before.
Still, it was a place to get tanks real cheap.

If they do have tanks left to sell? Once they go out of business it will be hard to get any tanks from them regardless of price.

They did have some tanks when I was there (Tue) but not alot. Whole store has that cleaned out look...they'd literally sell you anything you see in the store it seemed like. If they are open this weekend I may see if I can get anything for .10-.20 on the dollar kind of deals. Not sure if they will do, but if there this close to closing up, they might. If they auctioned it off they wouldn't get anymore than that.

Anyone been there in last day or two?

I have had a Great Lakes Aquariums for a very long time. One of my buddy's has one of there tanks for the 70's setup as a reef tank still doing great with original seals. They have a ebay store with write ups on all of there new products they are bringing out it looks pretty sweet not that much on there yet. They do have a 60 cube with a overflow maybe you should check them out. It says they dont ship but maybe they can get it to a store out in WI somehow. here is a link to the 60.

You should call The Coral Corner in Racine. Ben (owner) was telling me he can get deals on Oceanic tanks with a starfire front glass pane. Limited time only!
