Are 2 6055's enough for a LPS/Softie tank

I'm debating between 2 6055's in a 48x24x20 tank for LPS and softies vs 2 Vortech Mp40's.

Would the 2 6055's be enough flow in this size tank or do I need to step up to the 6105's?

The 6055's are more comparable to an MP10, they may be slightly stronger, the 6105 is the most comparable to the MP40. If this is not something you are looking to do soon, the new 6095 should be out in September and a pair of those would be ideal, as is I think the 6055's are a bit underpowered and the 6105 is a bit of overkill.

I have a pair of 6055s and a pair of 6105's in my 180 in wave maker mode

The 6055s are setup at 24v and the controller set to a max of 75%
The 6105s are setup at 18v and the controller set to a max of 100%

I would have to agree that the 6055s would be underpowered.

The 6105s are nice and they do push a lot of water.

If you were looking to get something right away
I would use the 6105s and dial them back a bit.

I have been very happy with mine.

On a side note I for the first time actually saw a pair of Vortex
pumps on a home aquarium, I was surprised at how loud they were.
The noise actually caught my attention and that was when I saw he
was running the Vortec pumps.

I strongly suggest the Tunze pumps as that noise would drive me crazy.
and If I remember correctly he only bought them a few months ago

My 6055s are about 3 years old and dead silent at any speed.

My 6105s are about 2 years old but I only hear them running at 100%
(but nowhere as loud as he Vortec, not even close)

Hope this helps

I have two 6105's in my 90gal. I like that I have "room to grow"; meaning they're powerful now and dialed down a bit but as my tank matures and becomes more densely packed with corals that will impede the flow I can dial them up as needed to provide more flow.

I think you'll be underpowered as well for flow. I have a 50 gal and I use two 6055 and an MP40 for my mixed reef. For a 100gal, you'll need more water movement otherwise you'll have dead spots which could lead to problems like cyano.

I'm in a similar boat. I have four 6055s and one 6105 for my 120, though I'm only running two 6055s through my Aquasurf. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the other pumps. I don't have the desire for much SPS, at least tank-wide. It seems like I have a decent amount of flow with the two 6055s and my Eheim 1260 return, but I'm thinking of adding another 6055.

I'm not sure if the 6105 would be overkill and blow sand around. If you're running these pumps in a 4 ft tank, do you have any issues with sand?

I did have blowing sand in my 120 with 2 6105s.....but you can swap the covers with the 6205s, and the flow is much wider and the blowing sand is almost completely eliminated.

2 6055s in my tank were too weak for me, the 6095s will be great to fill in that grey area between the 6055 and 6105 on larger 4' tanks that may be too short for the stock 6105.
