i am about to purchase a new ro/di from ebay for about $125.00. its a 6stage with dual Di's. are the dual Di's needed? or can i get away with one. i know that Di's are not realy nesessary so should i save the extra $$ and get extra replacement filters with the deal?

$125 is pretty cheap, if you like drinking great tasting water, make sure you get a spigot for your sink you can easily run to fill up a glass. That will save you a bunch over time on having to buy drinking water...unless you prefer municipal. :-)

Their all pretty much the same except for whats inside. Those cheap ebay units come with cheap carts and membranes that will most likely need to be replaced. They also come with small horizontal DI carts that are pretty much useless.

What makes you think DI's are not nesessary?

I just got mine off of ebay from http://www.filterdirect.com/

it's the 6-stage unit and i upgraded to the upright DI cartridge for $25 more so the total cost was $134 + shipping.

If you want to use this unit for mixing saltwater for your reef tank, you definately want the DI unit.

due to the fact that LFS offer just RO water. if the ebay units are useless, than what will i be looking at as far as $$ is concerned? what are the key points to be looking at in these systems? this will serve as a dual purpose. for drinking (not as much) and reef water (mostly)?? i know i can spend a ton of money on these. most of the threads indicate that the high dollar units are just the same as the ebay units (give or take)

After doing research I ended up ordering one of THESE the other day. It came down to that and the Typhoon III from air, water, ice. Since I am lazy, I chose the Optima C/A because the TDS meter is built in and it has dual inline readings.

I've been using the ebay unit for 3 months now, its started leaking but filterdirect replaced the bad stage for free. Other then that, water starts at 360-400ppm to about 7.

Just went to their store since its only 15 min away. I got the 6 stage that they recommend for home and aquarium use. Last week I added a larger DI stage to make it a 7 stage.

I did get the tank but but I got a good deal since a friend of mine knows the owner. If you were to get the same unit without the extra 7th stage it would be about $130pickup.

your better off just getting it delived, its about the same cost to pickup. I think its only $5 savings or something like that.

Take a look at www.purelyh2o.com for 150.00 you can get yourself a very good quality RO/DI unit. This will come with quality sediment, carbon block, DOW 75gpd membrane, and a single 10" DI cartridge.

Ebay units come with GAC carbon. membrane that only offer 90% rejection making your DI work way to hard. and cheap hollow DI tubes that only 1/3 of the media that a true 10" can hold. Do yourself a favor and buy a quality unit the first time. It will save you in the long run.

so do i get the duel DI unit or the single? 2 better than 1?

I got the single DI, but the 7th stage I added was a larger DI.

This is what I'm talking about. TBH, 7ppm is bad. If your ebay unit would have had the proper filters in it from the start you would be getting 0 TDS with a 99% rejection rate and and quality DI. My guess is that your horizontal hollow DI tubes are not doing the job they should be.

How do you get 0 when rejection isn't 100%?

Shouldn't 99% = some small single digit number?

So only 0 DTS should be used for reefs?
