Are clownfish supposed to be timid?

I have two clownfish that are paired (they're always together), but when the lights are on, they spend most of their time behind the rockwork and out of sight. If I find them in the front, they usually go and hide when I get up close to the tank.

When the lights are off, they "sleep" in the front of the tank.

Is this normal? It's been this way since I first got them in August.

Thanks.

Depends on what species, some species are more timid or seldom stray far from their anemone (home) while others are more bold (ex maroons, tomatoes, clarkii)

Mine never come out of the anemone unless I have food for them.

Yeah, feeding time is the only time they're sociable. Other than that, I'm a little disappointed because I never get to see them.

I was thinking that also, but there really isn't much back there except a couple small mushrooms.
