are css 65 skimmers any good

I was wanting to know some peoples thoughts on the coralife super skimmer 65. Are they worth getting. I have heard the aquac remora is a good one, but is it worth the extra money. The cheapest I have seen the css 65 is $90, and the aquac remora is $165. Is it worth it. I have a 38 gallon fish only by the way. and I guess you can call me cheap too. I might be in the wrong hobby if I am too cheap.

The CSS65 is on sale for $78.00 at petsolutions.com. I just ordered one for my 29G. I've read good and mediocre reviews on it, but no bad reviews. For the price, I figured it was worth a shot.

ive got one on my 30G long... it is not something you would want in your bedroom, the air inlet for the rio pump puts out a pretty high pitch sound, but nothing unbearable.... as far as the skimmer itself; it does a good job of skimming and sucks out a lot of crap, but it also will overflow for absolutley no reason sometimes, in fact, mine did just last night.. and this is after i drilled a hole in the collection cup and ran it to a 1 gal milk jug... the jug was empty when i went to bed.... this morning the floor was wet and the water level in my tank was about 3" lower than normal... only a couple more inches and the pump would have run dry.... but this is the most extreme it has ever been...it didn't start overflowing often until just recently... ive had it running now for about a month... so who knows... good skimmer for the money if you arent afraid of a little water everywhere.... just keep an eye on the cup after you've had it a couple weeks...

rlschne,

Do you have the silencer on the intake tube for the airline? My CSS 220 on my 55G tank is silent. I am dead serious, my Maxijet1200 is louder than it. But you have to have the gray silencer on it.

If you don't have one, contact Roland at roland@esuweb.com

He will get you hooked up with a new silencer for free.

yes, i do have the silencer, I've taken it off before just to see how loud it was and there is a huge difference, but even with it there it is still a fairly loud high pitch sound.... but like I said, it isn't unbearable....

You're supposed to attach another length of airline tubing to the other nipple on the silencer. Have you done that?

yeah, I figured that one out just the other day... i don't remember the instructions saying anything about that, it did help a little, but it is still a lot louder than the pump itself, and even my emperor 400 that i run for carbon - but thanks for throwing that out there, I'm sure someone reading this thread will read that and learn something new.... :)

Yes, it's not the quietest thing. But the longer you have the tubes, the quieter it gets. I would suggest putting one on the "breather hole" on the outlet as well. All of my tubes are at least 3 ft long. 3ft off the breather hole, 3 ft from the skimmer to the silencer, and another 3ft from the silencer to open air. Short tubing isn't going to cut down on noise.

120

120

Is the 120 quieter than the 65? I will have the new skimmer in my room, so it needs to be quiet. I am willing to spend the extra money on the 120 if it is quieter. I have a bunch of tubing, so if i put on 6ft or so, would that help? Remember, I will be sleeping this room, so it has to be quiet.

Thanks,
Vishboy

I received and hooked up my CSS65 two days ago. It takes some adjusting, but seems to be working very well. It is completely quiet. It's on my 29G tank in my bedroom, only a few feet from the bed and I don't hear any noise from it. I'll give a progress report after it's been working for a while.

would putting the length of tubing in another room help?

there is already a small hole in my wall
