Are Fungias hard to care for?

I've always loved Fungias...they where actually the reason I came into LPS....but then, once I was about to get one, I heard that they weren't easy to care for. Someone said that they either do well in your tank, or they don't- a hit or miss thing.

So is this true? As expensive as they are around here ( like, $100+ ), I'd hate to get a pretty pink one or yellow or something and it die...

Also, some info on them would be most appreciated! :frog:

I know there are different kinds....but are they all different as far as difficulty?
1: Must be placed in sand
2: Low to Moderate flow
3: Moderate lighting
4: Feed once-twice a week
5: Of course it's lps....so it wants good water quality.

All of that is correct but when you get one make sure you turn it upside down to make sure there are no bubbles under neath, I have heard of it killing them.

Oh, I forgot, there was one that was cheap, but it was glued to a frag plug...I thought they couldn't be glued? It was open and pretty,...but glued... should I still get it?

They are pretty easy keepers. You are pretty much spot on with your understanding from my experience (I currently have 3). I think I would avoid one glued to a plug. It wouldn't necessarily kill it but fungias do like to move around (ever so slowly) for whatever reason and not sure how they adapt if they are completely immobile. I think it would also reflect the husbandry of whomever you are getting it from and there may be other issues with its care...but if it is cheap and looks healthy it may be worth a roll of the dice!

I've kept fungias for many years and I don't like them on sand. they can get covered and lose tissue. I keep mine on flat rocks on the sandbed. Every once ina while I do have to reposition the small ones, the big 4"+ never move. Stay away from the long tentacle ones and you'll be fine.

Well, I went to the lfs...they upped the prices They have a pink one --that is splitting-- for a $130 or something...and two yellow/orange ones for the same. I just can't/won't spend that on a fungia... Went to another lfs, they have some really small ones that have bubble algae on the skeleton( the corals are retracted ), and the other ones they have are really big( so they are expensive too). The lfs with the glued one...it's around $50 I think.

Am I cheap, or are they overpriced??

well they are easy to take care of. I've got 5 or 6 of them and some cost more than others.I have a 40 dollar one and I have a 550 dollar one and some in between.

Ooohhh....pics? I was looking on Divers Den, but I figure once I add the shipping... I know I could buy my way up to 100 bucks....but not so easily to 200 for free shipping.
