Are mag pumps really that loud?

Wisher of the redo button
I just ordered a new Mag 7 for my return on my 50g. While I was just browsing some threads I was getting the hint that It's really loud and produces some extra heat.
Anybody want to give their opinion?

They vary. The Mag7 I had was by far the noisiest submersible pump I have ever owned.

They produce tons of heat... my Mag 18 and Mag 12 are currently keeping my system 7 to 10 degrees above room temp. If heat isn't a problem... you should be ok. If noise is an issue... might look for an Eheim or Quiet one, I hear they're good.

I'm now thinking to call tomorrow and change to the Eheim 1260. It looks like a great pump cause noise and heat are something I don't want to deal with. Is that better than the quiet one?

I got rid of the Mag7 and swapped it out for an Eheim 1260. Amazing difference. Night and day difference in noise. The thing that surprised me was flow. The Eheim had a ton more real world flow than the Mag7 despite the "ratings" of the pumps. QO pumps get mixed reviews. Some like them, but I see posts of restart problems, not so "Quiet" and also some report reliability problems. I wouldn't put them on the level of the Eheim.

Maybe something about the Mag 7 ? I have had a 9.5 on a 90g and I run a 12 on my 150g now, no noise, no temp difference.

One thing about the mag pumps is that they aren't energy efficient, hence the extra heat they produce. I've had eheims and quite ones and both makes were silent, which none of my mags (9s and 2400s only) could claim although I still don't find them excessively noisy. They suck the juice though... :)

What eheim pump will keep up with the mag 7. I don't want to push too much water thru the sump so a 1262 is probably too much right?
Even thou the rating on the 1260 is the same as the mag 7 does it push that much more?

1260 will be the closest. It will be more than a Mag7, but you could dial it back some if need be.

I switched from a mag to an eheim and it was one of my better decisions in this hobby. The eheim was much much more quiet and cooler. I'm very happy with the eheim.

I run mag 7 on both my 50 at work and 144 half circle at home and they are not really make that terible noise like every one said, mag 7 even make less noise than my tunze 9010,maybe it is the way you put it in the sump, they are small but out put 700gph so vibration is very highly concern,I used flex tube5/8" or 3/4" connector to eliminate it,maybe you use hard plumping pvc that why the noise never go off.I do own eheim 1060(previous of 1260) it is very quiet as the spare,as my comparation table I don't think eheim can beat mag drive in the flow at 5'.

It may be mfgr tolerances. Its quite likely some are better/worse than others. People also have different tolerance for noise and ambient noise level matters as well. I could hear mine on the main level of the house when I was on the 2nd level. The Eheim that replaced it was connected using the exact same plumbing and was nearly silent.

I run a mag 9.5 for my skimmer and a mag 12 for my return in my tank. The 12 is a little much, but it is leftover from my 135 and I use a valve to lessen the flow. Both are located in my sump. I will say that they have never made a lot of noise. Heat however is an issue like another poster stated. As a result of running both of the pumps in my sump, I have had to lower my heater down to 71 which keeps the tank at 78-79 degrees. Hope this helps.

My mag 7 didn't make noise itself, but it vibrated and thus was noisy in the sump. Engineering tolerance problems is my guess. I went through two impellers and a broken volute in 2 years. I finally threw the thing away and put in an eheim. Much better pump but more expensive and larger. Check size vs space before you order.

Also my temp dropped 1 - 2 degrees after I replaced it.
