Are most sumps custom made?

I am thinking of making one but I am afriad that once it is built then it is permanantly under the stand and will not be able to remove it.

Since I have a 55" long perhaps I can just build a tiny sump?

My tank stand has a wooden post in the center on either side which is prohibiting me from consdering having one.

i just used a 20g long tank with one set of baffles it works great the water level in the skimmer chamber is constant. Best of all it only cost me 10 dollars.

I have very limited space under my 100 gallon due to really poor design of the cabinet I have. You won't believe the living hell I had to go through to fit a sump, refugium, skimmer, kalk reactor, evaporation makeup bucket and control system, uv sterilizer, etc under there, but I did manage. Having a large sump to hold all your equipment and get it out of your display tank would be preferable, but even a smaller one that you could plumb in certain elements of your system (like your skimmer, reactors, etc) would be just fine. For a 55g, you should be able to get away with a pretty small one anyway. Maybe post some pics of your cabinet space situation? I'm sure you can figure something out.

I use a 20L for my tank, but the sump should be also designed for your equipment. In my case, the down size to the 20L is that it is only 12 inches wide so skimmers are normally limited to only about 8 inches in diameter with the pumps of to the side. My suggestion, identify the equipment you want and design a skimmer for that, then apply the size limits of your stand. If your desired sump is to big, the start scaling down the equipment until it fits... maybe you have both a sump and a fuge divided.

lets not start posting pics of sumps, they all hold water...

how much room do you have on either side in the sump? can you post pics of your stand to get an idea of what you have? any side doors by any chance?

in response to your original question

If you consider a standard aquarium with DIY installed baffles a custom made sump the answer is yes. A lot of large systems have custom made sumps, but, from what I've seen the majority of sumps for tanks under 300g is a standard glass tank with DIY baffles installed.

at least my picture is relevant not only do i also have an unusual sized space under my tank i am using a cheap sump just like he wants.

BTW did not mean to be rude but posting a pic of foam in a skimmer is just not helpful if you were to show how it was setup in the sump that would be one thing... also your skimmer is not at all what he needs its way too small its almost as if you just wanted to post a picture and didn't read the question.

catch the irony?

Lets not start posting pics of stands, they all hold tanks.. ok, now to toss water everywhere

Not all sumps hold water... when they don't... the best aquarium tools come out... the mop and wetvac!!! ... plus, I am then sleeping on the couch for a night or two.

GSMguy, that is one unique stand, no way you ould describe that to me without a pic.

And yes, a picture or a diagram would be useful

I don't know maybe it's just me but I like seeing all the different configurations people are using for their plumbing I've taken some good Ideas away from posts when I wasn't even looking.

And who needs a lot of space my 20g high works just fine for my needs:
Let me share a pic ;)
