Are orangespotted diamond gobies known jumpers?

I bought an ODG last week and had him in an uncovered quarantine tank. He hung out at the bottom of the tank for six days as I would expect. Yesterday I came home to find that he was dried out on the floor. I had not read anything about gobies being likely to jump so I didn't take any precautions against it.

Sorry for your loss, but I wouldn't leave any tank uncovered. Even fish that don't usually jump can and will if scared or startled. Or for no reason at all.

Orange spot gobies are the king of jumpers, they seem to be very easily spooked. I've had one jump through eggcrate.

Definitely; they are world class jumpers. I've seen a lot of stores where they migrate from tank to tank each day on their own.

I also agree with Darth. Any fish can jump. I've seen frogfish go carpet surfing.

Another lesson learned - time for an egg-crate screen before the next addition goes in!

Sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, it seems most aquarists need to have this happen to them before they learn to keep ALL tanks covered regardless of what species are in them.

BTW, Egg crate is not sufficient to keep jumpers in the tank. You need to find a screen with 1/4" holes or smaller to keep them from squeezing through.

I find that egg-crate works quite fine for angelfish, tangs, etc not that they jump very often. Its the wrasses, gobies, and sometimes anthias that squeeze through it. Eels can just knock it out of place as well if they are large enough.
