Are Protein Skimmers Overrated?

I feel your pain. There was a Worst Skimmer in the World thread here on RC. Seems like I have owned and cussed many that were listed. I finally found a good skimmer and now don't have to cuss it too much. It has also made my system better. I don't think that skimmers are overrated - I do think some crappy skimmers can make it seem that way.

hello sir, great point, maybe they left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended, lol) and who knows i might install one in the future if i could find one to exchange for frags because i really dont want to spend more money, happy reefing

i have also had a bad taste in my mouth. finding many skimmers need to be modded to work well. i have finally arrived at a tunze 9430 and i am now satisfied

You don't need a protein skimmer if you do large/frequent enough water changes, but most folks would not want to keep up with that type of schedule.

it would be fine if you have the ability to do huge water changes it would eliminate dosing etc

Sana, if I had those problems I would go skimmerless also. J/K. I use the ETSS on my system, once you set it very little if any adjustment. Geat skimmers but are a litle noisy and you need to use a pressure rated pump.

I do not think skimmers are over-rated but I do think they are over-priced. There was a thread here on RC winging about the high price of vortechs. They are pricey, but when I see the price tag on some skimmers, I think the vortechs are a steal. I'm just NOT spending a grand on a few bits of extruded acrylic and a power head or two.

well they are overpriced too, hehe, when i say that they are overrated is when i read posts like

"if you dont have a skimmer you will fail" or "if you dont have a skimmer your corals wont glow"

This is why they IMO they are overrated and you can have a great tank without one, but its a personal choice if you want to have one
