Are Royal Grammas Shrimp Safe??

I put a small cleaner shrimp in my tank last week. It dissapeared about 3-4 hours after acclimation and it hasn't been seen since. I had a cleaner shrimp in the past for a few years in my tank with a clown, 6 line, and coral beauty with no problems. They all seemed to value its services. After it died I added a Royal Gramma to the tank. About 6 months later (last week) I decided to add another cleaner shrimp and it dissapeared. It was small (about 1" long). Since the other fish seemed used to being around one, I can only suspect the Gramma made a $20.00 snack out of it. I doubt it would be hiding for a week without coming out or any sightings. Anyone else have this problem?

I've never known Royal Grammas to be agressive towards shrimp. They are very territorial, however, so it could happen but I'd doubt it was the Royal Gramma.

They may just be hiding or climbing out of the tank. Royal grammas are known to pick on inverts or corals.

My RG doesn't bother shrimp.
I have one cleaner and two peppermint.
When I added the two pepps, they disapeared for over two weeks.
I thought they became snacks as well.
I was so surprised when they came out.
Now they're out all the time.
Hopefully you'll have the same outcome

Thanks for the replies. I hope it is just hiding. I thought I saw the remnants of 2 antennae on the substrate but I could not be sure.

When they molt they take to hiding for quite a while until the carapice (sp?) hardens.... try feeding some cyclopeeze or some other dusting type of food ...... I hope that you end up finding it ... I also have a Gramma that has peacefully co-existed w/ a shrimp for a while now .... Did have a bi-color dottyback that was evil and tortured my shrimp......good luck

Brazilian royal grammas are nasty and have been known to pick on certain inverts. If your gramma doesn't show this kind of behavior, then perhaps you didn't acclimate long enough. Shrimp and other inverts are very delicate when it comes to proper acclimating.

any known copper in ur system? they r either hiding or dead- try moving some stuff around.

I highly doubt ur Gramma would attack a shrip, i've housed serveral shrip w/ a gramma w/ no problem

I had two adult peppermint shrimp vanish within three weeks of each other, after having been in the tank for about 5 months. This corrosponded with a period when I was feeding my tank less, and I suspect the Royal Gramma (have you seen how wide it can open its mouth when it wants to?).

The other fish were a couple of small clowns and a yellow watchman goby. Nothing else in the tank but snails, corals, and an urchin. The reduction in feeding was not enough to starve a shrimp, but it did make the fish more assertive.
