Are Sicce pumps fixable?

You guys realize this thread is months old but was dug up by the my2girls poster right ??? :D

Oh, and My2Girls, the pumps are identical, so how can the ATI one be "superior" to the MS one ??? It's ALL in how you set them up. I'll put my MSX250 up against any ATI skimmer any day of the week. :)

Yeah, it's all in the mesh mod. But one thing people don't understand -- ATI has a different mesh that makes things much easier to start up. It niether PF4 nor flatbottom exactly.

But I like the rejuvenation of the thread, as I'm getting lots of props! Not that they are deserved, but I'll take 'em! :)

I just looked at the MSX wedsite to see if anything is new on there and theyre now making cones....

Their MSX1A with the single 1500 Askoll pump on it is SWEET...

My skimmer works PERFECTLY so I cant really justify buying a new skimmer..... Or can I ?!?!?!?

You been hiding in a cave the last few months? The SWC cones are small, small, small. Lots of others out there these days and more coming soon.

I really don't see the benefit in the cone design. I do see the benefit in the bubble plate though. I think that a similar sized tube skimmer would perform just as well as the cone skimmer. It is all about the air/water ratio IMO.

I think there is a benefit to the cone, but the price increase isn't worth the performance increase IMO.

Marine Solutions did a test on their skimmers to see if there was a significant difference.....

The MSX 250 has been operational in the system for about 9 months, so it is fully broken in. The Cone 1A had bee running for about 1 week at the beginning of the test, and the 2S had only been running 2 days. The Sicce's on the 250 were drawing 32 and 33scfh, and the Sicce's on the 2S are drawing 35 and 36scfh. The Askoll on the 1A is drawing 71scfh. All skimmers were run for a few days and adjusted to pull the same color of skimate. All results are Ounces of skimate produced between cleanings (4 days between)

Enough talk, here's the results:

Date...........MSX250............MSX1A............MSX2S

12/18.........26oz.................32oz...............30oz

12/22.........28oz.................38oz...............37oz

12/26.........26oz.................43oz...............40oz

12/30.........27oz.................52oz...............48oz

1/3.............27oz.................63oz...............55oz

1/7.............29oz.................68oz...............61oz

1/11...........28oz.................71oz...............60oz

1/15...........29oz.................74oz...............62oz

Totals:.......220oz................441oz.............393oz

Average.....27.5oz..............55.25..............49.125

Average
difference...0%...................52%................44%

Difference
on last day..0%..................61%................53%

Pretty significant difference if you ask me between the designs. I'm wondering how much difference my MSX250 would be though since I made my mashing as good as I can get it and am pulling about 45 SCFH each pump instead of the 32 and 33 they have with the pinwheels....

Its nice that they tried something to try and quanitfy things. But they are in the business of selling these things. I understand they also sell the MSX 250 but the markup on the cones are likely quite a bit better. Showing its worth the extra money benefits them. Not that is needs to be said but, I'll say it any way, their methods are highly unscientific. I do applaud them for doing something if they were honest with the testing but, its tough for me to believe anything people selling me stuff say. Lots of BS in this hobby for sure.

Greg at Reefgeek was told by ATi that the Sicce pump on the Bubblemaster skimmer was made specifically for ATi. Look at the two side by side, they are different. Is there an increase in performance, maybe not.

I didn't mean to drudge up an old thread to argue, just thought a bump would help the spammers. There is good information on the first page.

I can tell you for a fact that, look at the two side by side, there is no difference. I've owned 2 ATI Sicces and 3 original Sicces. They are identical in every way, shape and form except for the mesh on the impeller, the air venturi on the volute and the o-ring. There are old threads here where Oliver confirms that ATI did the mods themselves, not Sicce. Sorry, but Greg was misinformed or someone misinterpreted what he said.

I found it hard to believe too. I don't even know if Greg believed it either. At any rate, thanks for having me in your club forum.
