Are Sponges toxic?

I have a friend that has a Queen Angel that is eating his sponges and he is worried that they may be toxic. He calls the sponges that he has the tear-drop variety. He explained that after the fish started chowing down his water (200g) looks a little cloudy and is worried that it may have released toxins. Thanks,

Most sponges do release some nasty stuff when they die. I dont know about this particular variety though.
