I have a large yellow tang (4-5") that came with the 180 gallon tank I bought. I was told it would be hard to add new smaller fish with him in the tank. so when I move the 180 tank he ended up in a temp tank thats 55 gallons. I would like to move him back in the 180 but I still would like to add more fish soon like a small blue tang, green mandarin, and some firefish. In the 180 is 7 green chromis, a diamond watchman, and a coral beauty. Just interested in everyone's thoughts and opinions.

The 3 or so that I have had over the 15+ years in this hobby have all been territorial. Since you already have it in a different tank then I would keep it that way until you add atleast the blue tang. Not sure if it will go after the firefish or mandrin but both of those are very timid types of fish so you might want to consider adding them too before putting the YT back in there. FWIW IME (remember I have only had three or four of them) they don't bite or try to plain out kill the new comers but they sure do harrass and try to make darn sure the new guy knows who is in charge lol.

Thanks for the info. That is what I was thinking. Just feel bad having the yellow tang waiting in the little tank. Thanks again

I would say if you have plenty of LR with lots of bolt holes and such, the firefish and mandarin should be fine. Firefish, from what I have seen, don't stray too far from their home, and do not swim around a lot either so they wouldn't go "trespassing."

If this helps, I used to have a yellow tang about 8 years ago in a 75... with 2 clowns, three yellow tailed damsels, and a clown goby (all small fish (especially the goby)) and he never bothered them at all.
