Arrogant LFS employee....

I am not surprised to read your post becuase there are a few LFS in my area and I know more then the employe's, about a lot. Whats funny is that I somtimes help the customers when they ask the employe the questions. I stop by those places once in a while becuase somtime they have stuff priced wrong, becuase they don't know what they have.

I live in Virginia Beach and we have a LFS called ReefChief and its probably the best on the East cost. It's hard pressed to ask a question that they don't know or will look up for you on the spot. They also go out of there way to help you. On top of that they price match anything in there store with any internet website store!(not to mention the crazy coral that they have for sell)

Needless to say I only go there to buy stuff that matters.

All I can say is WOW!! Now THAT really sucks that I am 3 hours away from them :(

There was a lfs (now out of buisness) that was always rude to me. A new store opened up in the area and I never went back. Newer store is the best place to go, friendly and honest, even if it cost them a sale. Just a plug for them.

IMO, each reefer is responsible for all the inhabitants added to a tank. If you want a specific fish or invert but are told that it is not a good choice do you keep asking around to find the answer you want? Live Aquaria is a great retail site and they often provide good information but the bottom line is they are there to sell. It is not prudent to rely on them as the ONLY source of information about any marine animal. Research. Research. Research.

If I go into a store with rude employess I typically do not return.

Screw liveaquaria. I have been trying to get Kevin to let me take a tour of their facility for a wile now and they just keep saying no. I even drove 5 hours to their aquaculture farm to talk to Kevin Kohen because he wouldn't return my calls and he still wouldnt let my dad and I in for a tour. I know its not their responsability to let people in off the street but at least entertain people and say that if they came on this day in 2 months or something then let them see it.

As for the Reef Chief, I have been going to Jeffs shop ever since he was running it out of his garage. That dude knows his stuff and really does have an awesome selection. I even gave Jeff all of my maintenance customers when I moved away from VABeach.

I've worked plenty of retail jobs in my time, including as a net jockey. I have to say that no matter what you think of a customer, the bottom line is they can potentially spend money in your shop. Maybe this is the Minnesotan in me, but paste a big happy smile on your face, be polite and helpful, and answer all their questions without being arrogant. If you can't handle that, you shouldn't be working retail no matter how knowledgable you are.

OP, I'd recommend contacting the owner and explain the incident. See if he/she can make things right before you stop going in. If it happens again, I'd walk.

Stalker

I thought the same thing this morning when I read it again. We just figured that they would at least let us peek through the door or something. We did still end up buying a tank and some corals from their retail store.

Wow, you honestly think LA should open up for every customer that whines to see it? It's not like it's a secret that their aquaculture facility is closed to the public. If you want to see it go to the frag swap.

Newport News right here, I make the trek down there every once in a while, I wouldnt say he is the best on the east coast, but for sure the best in Eastern Va. The other day the owner of the store came in on his day off to quote me on some prices that his employee did not know...that is customer service.
