Askoll vs Sicce?

What's the big deal about these askoll pumps? I am looking at a MSX-300 and if I get it with the Sicce pumps it is half price! (almost) Are these Askoll pumps THAT much better? If so, how?? What's the big deal or big difference?

Thanks!

Yes especially for the 300. The 2 sicces aren't enough for the 12" body ( they work but could be better) also with the askoll you only have 1 pump to plug in and mess with. The airdraw is more and is extremly quiet

I think the Askoll can pull 90 SCFM (Most manufacturers are stating 70SCFM). Both Sicce pumps might do 60 SCFM on their best day. Thats the difference.

No they aren't THAT much (double the price) better, IMO. However, the statements above do hold merit. There is a definite performance increase when going with the askoll, whether that difference is worth $300..... is up to you.

Here is the way I see it.

Askoll/Laguna

Pro: dead silent, energy efficient, good air to water ratio, Askoll motor is known to be very long lasting.
Cons: Askoll motor is expensive even prior to adding modified volute.

Sicce PSK 2500

Pro: low price, silent, extremely energy efficient, good air to water ratio, small compact size,
Cons: intermittent failure to restart (mostly associated with mesh modded pumps. ATB and Warner Marine have shown that this is not an issue with their needlewheel versions), decreased performance when pump starts in reverse (alleviated by turning the pump off and back on to get it to start the right direction. ATB's modifications have eliminated this on their version)

To me, the Askoll is the closest to being the perfect skimmer pump. Not many would argue that. The Sicce represents the best bang for your buck of any skimmer pump by far. Question is what matters more to you. If you don't mind the minor cons of the Sicce, the ultra low price makes it extremely attractive.

Just poking in here real quick.....
Really, when comparing the Askoll to the Sicce you need to compare it to TWO Sicce's. So, it's not a $300 difference, it's a $30 difference (2 Sicce's w/ PW's...$135 x2 =$270, 1 Askoll with volute and PW = $299).

That is buying both pumps brand new retail.

you know they have a new 300a coming....

You are leaving yourself wide open here. If its a $30 different why the $200 difference in price between the 300 and 300a??

I was more or less comparing the final price of the MSX 300 and the 300A. I did overstate by $100 though:

The msx300 is at $399 (Great deal by the way!!) and the 300A is at $599.

If a 300A was $430 I'd buy one right now:)

you can put the askoll on the 200 but it will be too much pump for the body and neck. ( constantly overflows) You could try with the extended neck but I would think i would be still too much

You can get away with this if you run the output of the Askoll into the "Sicce adapter", this will knock the flow down - you will get about 60 SCFH out of the pump. You will also want to use a shorter piece of pipe for the exhaust of your skimmer. Without this you will have difficulty controlling the water level in the skimmer.

Can I run the Askoll pump on a MSX200?

Won't the extended neck help?

I just got the 300A drilled for the askoll pump holy s**t. This thing is a beast! This is probally the best investment I have made for this tank!Hands down.
