I have an AquaC EV 180 on a 175 Oceanic Bowfront. Was wondering if the ASM G-3 was a better skimmer or about the same. Anyone have any experience with both of these?
I have an EV 180 and love it. It is only on a heavily stocked 75 gallon with 30 gallon sump/fuge. It keeps it clean though. I haven't had the first sign of cyano since I installed it.
I can't speek to the ASM though, never had any experience with it.
I'm wondering if the EV 180 is enough for my system or should I go with a EV 240. I noticed that the ASG G-3 is rated at 250gallon vs the EV 180 and the EV 240 and it cost half as much. What do you think?
I would go with the AquaC 240. I would go with the G4 as well as you will be pushing it with the G3, unless you do a recirc mod.
I am running an ASM G3 on my 125, and no complaints. I wish I got an AquaC though.
The only thing about the ASM's is that you have to mod them a bit for optimal performance. I have a gate valve and drain plug on mine along with the mesh mod. With the AquaC's, they are optimally set right out of the box. They can be run in-line or in-sump as well as they don't leak whereas the ASMs do leak a bit out of their joints and need to be in-sump.
The ASM's are grossly overrated in terms of thier rated capacity. I wouldn't use a recirc/gate/bubbler/mesh modded G3 on anything more then a 125. I have the EV240 on my 125 and love it.
For a that stocked of a 175, the ev180 will be good for now. If you can look into an EV240, then upgrade to a Mag 24 pump and a 1" injector.
I recently got a AquaC EV for my 375 I'm putting together, its been highly recommended and plus its really nice having customer service that actually works if I can't get the answer at SITC, where I got mine, I can call/email aquaC and they are quick to respond. I was shooting emails back and forth with them for a while, before I purchased mine and they were great.
You might check this out. There is some good information on pump/skimmer combinations and maybe you could just add a pump to your 180 that would increase the output...
i was reading about the aquac today - the reef aquarium science art and technology 3rd addition - they said there was a few downfulls about it if i remember correctly, but over all a good skimmer and if i had to pick outta the two of those i would do the aqua c
Yea, a few of the downfalls are if you smoke in the house, forget about owning one, and everytime you feed/stick your hand in the tank, the foam tower will collapse. It will also need frequent cleaning, every few days, 2-4 is recommended.
I use an ASM G3 on my 180. Many have seen my tank. I have no issues keeping colorful corals and I have over 15 fish in my tank consisting of 4 tangs. I used to have an Aqua C and to be honest, it didn't pull much out. My G3 isn't modded.
