asm g1 questions

Does anyone know if this is a good skimmer? Can you use any other pumps besides the sedra pump that comes with it? I only have a 30 gal, and will have 5-10 gal for sump. So I'm not worried about it being sufficient.

ASM is an OK skimmer...their constructed of injection molded plastic and extruded PVC tubing..so for the price some woulld consider them a good buy...The G1 series is rated up to 100g and comes with a Sedra 2500...Im not sure if you can use any other pumps...but I dont see why not~!

Since Ed opened the door to other options, I will second the popularity of the Octopus skimmers. The Tunze DOC skimmers also seem to be quite popular and efficient!

Okay, so I tested a couple of these a few weeks back, and I thought that they were a bit inconsistent, but also had alot of potential. The turbulence within the reaction chamber is very dynamic, but I had some issues with maintaining the kind of foam head necessary to facilitate skimmate development. I think that the recirculating mod that people do on those things would go a long way toward improving performance, but the standard model just didn't give me a consistent output of the kind of thick and dark skimmate I was looking for. Pump mesh (enkamat) mods are also very popular with this model, though I have no experience with those typs of mods myself. As far as the pump goes, the Sedra is basically the same size, design and dimensions as the Mag pumps, so swapping out the pump would be very simple.

One final note: this skimmer is VERY similar to the EuroReef RS series...

I'm sure swapping pumps is easy but Mag pumps don't have the crucial Pin wheel impeller like the Sedra. If you want to up grade the stock pump I'd try to find a Aqua Bee 2000 (Same one that Deltec skimmers have) or Ehime w/Needle wheel.

I like the Sedra pumps so if it were my I'd stick w/stock.

Thats 3 days worth in my euroreef RS80, its in a 80g tank. I really like my ER, its easy to use and works really well. I get some nasty stuff out of it all the time. I would recommend it to anyone. It was a little pricey at $230 at Exotic, I feel it was worth it.
Thats my .02

Okay, I was trying to go cheap, but you know how that goes. If you can get it cheap it's probably not worth it. I was looking at the octopus skimmers before and I think I'll end up going with the 110 or 150. The recirc are really nice, but I can't justify the money for a 30 gal. I also was looking at the octopus shredder, but I don't know if it's that much better. Cool idea though. Thanks for everyones $.02 It's amazing how $.02 can save you a lot of cash.
