ASM Mesh Mod

I just thought I would pass this along to those out there considering doing a mesh mod on your skimmer. By all means....DO IT!

I recently bought an ASM G4 from some fly-by-night guy. It had the recirculating and gate valve mods. I just incorporated the mesh mod on the Sedra 9000. Man, what a difference!

This is a pic of 4 days of skimmate. Your eyes do not deceive, it is black.

Here is a pic of the froth it generates.

Do you have any leftover mesh material? I was going to post something in here about a group buy since I've only seen it in large packs for $30. Kind of a waste since you only need a few square inches.

I've been afraid to do this since you have to cut the pins off your needlewheel. Sharp objects and me don't mix.

Buy a cheap replacement impeller and use that instead of cutting up your needlewheel.

I was worried about that too. However, after I took the plunge, I really don't foresee ever using the needlewheel again.

i also have a g3, was wanting to do the recirculating (sp) mod. can you send me a pic of yours so i know what i have to do to it, its allready got the gate mod done to it... or tell me how to make it recirculating? i think ill do that mesh mod also since my tank isn't set up yet.. thanks in advance..

I had good results with the meshwheel mod on my G3. I went from 3/4 cup of skimmate production per week to 3 cups per week. I have yet to see how consistent the results are but it's clearly working better.

not trying to change subject of thread:

But does anyone know if you can do the gate valve mod and the mesh mod on a ER RS135 skimmer?

I have been told these skimmers use a pin wheel pump? is this the same as a needle wheel?

can someone show me a pic of the recirculating mod, i don't have time to read all 40 pages on the ASM thread, and i can't search, or even better tell me step by step how to do it! thanks.. one more thing i was just looking at my pump and i don't see any screws to get the cover off so i can get to the impellor?

Jim_Leyland: To get to the impeller you twist the venturi/volute (the water/air intake on the pump) to unlock it and then it comes off, exposing the impeller.
