ASM G5 8.5" 36" 16"x17" 2 x 9000 700 gal
IM THINKING OF PURCHASING THE ABOVE MENTIONED SKIMMER FOR MY 224. ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SKIMMER. IS IT A GOOD DEPENDABLE SKIMMER. IM DEF OVERSIZING IT CUZ ILL HAVE A HEAVY LOAD IN THE TANK.:bounce1::bounce1:

I ran a G6 on my 400 gallon quite successfully for about 2 years. Mine had 3 Sedra 9000s which gave me no trouble during that period. The cone leaked where it joins the main body, so I eventually just sealed it permanently on there.

I don't think you are as oversized as you think. Eventually, I had to replace my G6 with a significantly larger skimmer. (I doubled the chamber size) That replacement seems to have solved some major problems I began to have as the system matured.

For the money, I think these are a good deal. Eventually, you will replace it...but that is half the fun of this hobby!

Is space an issue? TRUST ME...The ASM's are horribly over-rated (meaning they would NOT handle the size system they say they can) and are nowhere near as good as the newer and more efficient models are. Do yourself a huge favor and spend $100 more to get a Super Reef Octo 5000 external...

The Octo pulls a lot more air, is a more intelligent design, is more efficient, and just plain works better. You will be hard pressed to find anyone that has upgraded from an ASM to a more modern designed skimmer that would happily go back to the ASM. It's an outdated design that has been passed by leaps and bounds performance wise. Buying an ASM these days now would be like buying a brand new 1985 camaro.

i have an asm and i agree that they are outdated. mine also leaks where the cone meets the main body. if i were to buy another skimmer i dont think it would be asm. i would buy a deltec if i could afford it or an octopus. my lfs swears by them

i have fouf asm skimmers and they all have been nothing but great for what i use them for ,removing waste .they are simple and i have seen some that are better built but for the money asm all the way .its in the sump so what if your leaks .mine have no eaks and no signs of poor craftsmanship although they are as lightly built as possiable .the pumps provibed have always restarted and i have two that are over five years old and never have i pulled the pumps out or apart except once to retrieve a rubber band.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone else have the octo? Im leaning in that direction, but id like to find out more about it. Would i be able to keep it in my sump?

It can be run either in or outside your sump...It takes up roughly the same amount of space as the G5 you were considering.

Perfect since I need an in sump skimmer. I place it directly in the sump after it passes the Caulerpa section of the sump. Can you guys recommend a calcium reactor for the tank and would i also require a kalkwasser reactor?

look at the geo line of calcium reactors, they are pretty much as solid as it gets, kalk is something I personally don't use, nor would I use, a good trick to keep your ph from crashing is to have the output from the calcium reactor near the intake of of your skimmer, in my case when I move to my next house here in about 8 months and start my 380 gal project, will be using a skimmer from http://www.barraquatic.com/ where i can run my calcium reactor effluent directly into the skimmer body

I agree with iamwrasseman above. I have a G6 and it serves its pupose very well for a fraction of the cost. Other than a yearly maintainance I have never had a problem except for when I steped on the cord and pulled the pump off of the bench and broke. My bad but the ASM works just fine. A 1985 Camaro will still get you from point A to point B just like a new $40,000 Camaro SS.
