Like the title says I’m at a cross-road. I’m moving on Friday and I’m thinking about (1) breaking down the tank to cook the rocks which are COVERED in turf algae and maybe go BB, or (2) set it back up and try to kick the stuff.
A little background:
I’ve had a turf alge problem all year and was making slow progress after getting my MONSTER DIY skimmer going and putting a HOB fuge on the back of the tank. I only got a 29 so the hang on fuge is sufficient in size. Anyway the progress I was making was slow because I wasn’t removing the algae by hand like I should have and my skimmer wasn’t working great at first. Then I left for the summer and had my girlfriend/roommate watch the tank while I was finishing my Masters away at school. I get back and it’s worse than ever.
Should I break the sucker down, find someone to babysit my small collection of corals and 2 clams OR fight?
Side note about the Algae:
I don’t understand why this stuff is so tough. I also don't know why it is growing in my tank given that I don’t really have to clean my glass off ever because it grows no algae. It grows nowhere but the rocks!! The worse part is that the stuff is IMPOSSIBLE to pull off by hand. The closest thing I can describe it to is pulling hair off of someone’s head. It holds on for dear life to the point where when I do pull out a rock and pull some off I need to do it with pliers (no joke). Anyone else encountered this tough as nails type of algae?
-I don't feed ever (I got 1 fish who can take care of himself)
-I do have detectable levels of nitrates since getting back this summer but before that I didn't
-I've got a lot of red legged hermits and snails
-Shallow sand bed
