Atlantic blue surgeon

I got my ABT last September at about 2". After 9 months it's about 6", continuing to grow rapidly, and dominates my 300G. While Scott Michael lists the maximum size at 9", other references show it growing to 15" in the wild.

Well zfunk I found out there are no problems importing fish to canada. The only concern that arrises is one of time. I dont know how long it would take to get here but I dont live near a big city. It would need to get onto an other plane to get to me. Maybe fed ex could do it in 1 day? I did a search on the deworming and it seems fairly feasable. (many meds available for treatment)

Thank you jeffie for the deworming info.

Sat, thank you for the heads up on size of these fish. Could you please share with us who or what those "other references" are? I would like to see a few pics of your fish, could you please post a few? Thanks.

emperior, i wanted fist hand info, if you cant provide any please dont post on this thread. simple as that, thats if you can read and understand the first post on this thread. Funny how soooo many people dont get it........

Jeffie, great info on the deworming. You have now answered the question I just asked on my Moorish Idol thread. He is eating like a pig but seems to get skinnier and skinnier. He MUST have some kind of intestinal bug. Do you know if you can use the medication in their food to help get rid of it?

Green Thumb, i'm sure they could ship over night to Canada. I'll look into it and find out how much it costs. You'll have to wait a month though, cause I want to quarantine them for that long and make sure they are doing ok first. But they are eating so thats good.

Yep, mix it in with his food and that should work. Let me know what medication you end up getting and I will get a dosage for you. Only problem is, I'm going out of town tonight for the weekend so I won't be by a computer till Sunday night. If you get the meds at the LFS there should be a dosage description that comes with it. You do need to feed it to them though to rid internals even if the medication instructions say to just administer it to the water.

Well I went to 5 different LFS's (including my own) and I coulden't find Pipzine. Is there anywhere online I can get it?

Wow. I am new here just trying to learn about salt water fish. You should keep in mind this forum should be for learning and optaining info. This doesn't look good for reef central.

Sorry everyone. I was ref. to the first page. The thread was very helpful in the next pages.
Moderators can't read every post so we rely on other members to report threads that are in trouble. In this case there was no report and I noticed the problem only after the thread seemed to be back on track. Had that failed to happen, I would have posted a warning about good behavior and possibly taken further action if that didn't work.

Just an update on the 3 ABT's I caught. After 3 weeks in quarantine I decided today to introduce them into my 210 Reef. They seem to have adapted beautifully. They were eating 5 mins after I put them in. The 3 of them swim around together, bicker now and then but nothing serious, and attempt to school with my 2 blue chromis. And they even change from their yellow color to a bluish color when they are schooling with the Chromis. How Funny!

They also seem to hang around with my Moorish Idol. They are all grazing constantly. I have them eating spectrum pellets and just about anything else that goes in the tank. I will post pics soon when I can get a couple good ones of them together.

Hey funk man!

That sounds like good entertainment. Cant wait to see the updated pics of these guys. I realy wish to get one someday...

They will be very happy in your 210!!

I didn't see this thread earlier...I have a juv. ABT which I purchased after compiling my fish list for my tank using Scott Michael's book. My ABT lives in my 90 and really seems to do well in there. He likes to hang around with my orange skunk clowns and takes turns chasing and being chased by my mystery wrasse. All of my fish seem to get along well, but have different relationships with each other, as most of you have probably noticed in your own tanks.

Anyway, the ABT has been in my tank for almost a year and has not grown significantly at all. He is probably near 3" and just beginning to turn blue. I have made arrangements to place him with a friend who has a very large tank when he gets bigger, just because I don't want him to be cramped. It seems like it will be a while before that happens though.

Here are three photos of my tank in which the ABT can be spotted:

My tank is one year old as of yesterday. :D

COOL!
Thanks for the post Fussoverthis. Sounds like i could eazily get away with getting one of these for a year or 2 before I upgrade. Hmmm.

Your tank is realy nice by the way!

I'm still trying to get a decent picture of my 3 ABT's in my 210. They are so fast that its hard to get a decent shot. They are all doing very well and eating like pigs. I'll post some pics soon hopefully.

Here you go Green Thumb as promised a couple of pics from a few of my Atlantic Blues in my main display. They aren't that great of pictures and I couldn't get pictures together because they are so darn fast. But this will do for now:

They appear to be growing and are eating like pigs. They each got a few little ich spots when I put them in but they come and go. It's pretty normal for tangs though, so I'm not worried. I'm treating their food with garlic and with time that seems to clear up mild cases of ich. I'll try and post better pictures if I can get them.

Well it's been forever since this thread was posted in, so I figured I'd update on my Atlantic Blue Tangs. Of the 3 I had at the time of this thread last July, I still have 2 of them and they are between 5-6" long now. The 3rd one was killed by the 2 bigger ones :(. But the 2 that are left are doing great and seem to get along ok. I posted these in another thread on Atlantic Blue Tangs but I'll post them here as well. Here are some pictures:

These truly are great fish and I love them to death. Their colors have become brilliant and have grown at an amazing rate in the past year. I caught them when they were all under and inch in length so they are kind of sentimental fish for me. They are a bit boisterous from time to time with their tank mates but for the most part they get along.

More people should keep these tangs!

I 'I have had a young ABT in my 75 gal for two years. He is definitely getting to big for the tank. Fortunately I am currently setting up a new 150 gal. He has always appeared to be happy but I am sure he will love his new home.
