Atlantic blue tang

Looking for a little guidance on the Atlantic blue tang. I have one on hold but wanted to get some info from people here on RC who have or had an Atlantic blue tang.

I have a 180 gallon - the blue tang is a juvenile about the size of a silver dollar. Still yellow.

I presently have a naso (4 yrs old - about 10 inches long) yellow tang 5+ years old, and a hippo tang 9 months old about 5 inches long.

they are in a 6ft long 180.

What might I expect if I were to add the blue tang? they are different species of tang (similar to ptb and white cheek)

Are they aggressive? will the yellow tang get along with the blue tang?

My guess is there will be some power issues for a few days but just keep them fed often and should not be any threat of less food issues for the old guys.

I'd assume there might be some serious aggression from the yellow to be honest. The small juvi does look similar to the yellow, and yellow tangs aren't known for being passive. Especially one that's well established for 5 years I would be careful even in a 180. The little juvi blue wouldn't stand a chance at that size against the much larger tang.

i have an atlantic blue but just about a year, with a scopa/blue/sailfin all just coming out of the juvie stage and beginning to enter into adulthood. i have zero agression towards the blue or the blue inflicting. to be honest he is more passive then my scopa tang. i have mine in a 6 foot 125 gallon so im assuming you'd be pretty safe. mine eats like a pig as well.

sidenote: they are fast swimmers and should be able to compete well for food.

Thanks everyone - I now have the little guy in QT - hope for the best vs the yellow tang. the yellow tang is not an aggressive one - has her side of the tank.

Good luck. Maybe re arrange the rock work some when you introduce it. I really wanted one of these but couldn't find one and I wanted to get all my tangs at the same time so I went with a kole tang in its place. I've never seen one in person but I think the adult colors look fantastic in some pics I've seen. Other pics are drab and ugly.

my atlantic blue doesn't seem to be aggressive at all. He was one of the first in the tank and I've introduced a lot of fish since then.

well guys my Atlantic blue tang has now been in the DT for 3 days and adjusting great. the yt is a little miffed but nothing serious

I since was able to find one just changing to adult colors from a local reefer. Thing eats like crazy, non stop. I think he eats as much by himself as the rest of my fish put together.

Here is an update: the little guy is adjusting well - 0 issues with the yellow tang. great personality. Loves nori.

photo swimming with buddies.
