Atlantis New Display and Acropora Sale!!!!!

well that last post should have been spell checked. Atlantis seem to alway have a large selection of fish and corals. I personally think they have great prices , and their reef and fish knowlegde is very extensive. I think they are one of the best in Jax . You have to go and check it out. hey if you think you had a bad day at the fish store as a customer try getting help at home depot. LOL

They say the only stupid question is one that isn't asked.....

I'd have to disagree here .. When it comes to my first marriage, the stupid question was "Will you marry me" <G>

so, how smart is it or not to spread the little biz i'm able to give around the diff. LFSs?

i've bought from fishmania, atlantis, and considered aqua zoo.

does it make any diference as long as they treat you right and the livestock looks fine?

i'm considering adding more liverock, i wonder if it's best to go back to the source of my first 50lbs.

i'm not really asking for a recommendation, just general rule if there is such a thing.

In general, I'm all for supporting the local stores. Most times, when I want something I find the price online, include the shipping then contact a couple of stores. If they can get me close to the total price (or beat it), I'll buy from them. Of course "close to the total price" is always relative. I don't have a certain percentage or anything.

More specifically, I tend to visit the closest store to where I live that not only provides good customer service, but also takes care of their livestock. I'm not as concerned as how fancy the inside of the store looks. I'm more concerned that over all, the store is neat and that they take good care of their livestock.

I've been in stores whose tanks were loaded with algae, fish with ick, dead fish, etc. Regardless of the customer service, that is a store that I will do business with. I also don't like stores that jack up their prices just so that they can have a "sale".

I hope that wasn't directed towards me. Well I can tell you that we don't do that, just ask any of our "regular" customers. Our store is far from fancy, (of course you have to come in to know that) we just have the best lighting on our coral tanks & it's appealing to the eye. Noboby should pass judgement on any store if they stop by once in six months. You can't go one time & see a dead fish (that may have just died) & say "that store has dead fish in their tanks. If there's dead fish everywhere, well, don't shop there. Or a little alge, massvie alge to where you can't see in the tanks, well, don't shop there. You won't find that here. Of course you won't know that unless you stop here. Just my thought on the matter

It was not directed at anyone, just a general statement, which is what was asked for.

Your points are valid though. When going to any store, a single visit is not always, in fact, I would say rarely, a good barometer of a store (any store, regardless of what they are selling). Unless, the store was so hideous as to be evident that it is obvious that the way it looks is normal (again, not directed at anyone).

I also believe that you should bring up your concerns with the store/company. If you don't give someone an opportunity to correct the issue, then you are doing yourself and the person/company you are doing business with a disservice.

Just to clarify an earlier post. When I said:

I meant to say that I would not shop at a store that was like that. Unless, I was keeping an algae/ick tank :bum: :smokin:

Again, not directed at any store in particular.

When I visit a store the first thing I look for is a tank that clean, no algae and displayed so I can see the live stock. Is it healthy?
If I can't tell I walk.
I am not going to waste much time seeing if a store has changed but rather visit stores that present their livestock in a way that I want. I am too busy to drive all over town to stop by every store.

I am afraid to do that. I don't want to get banned from the store or sound like a "know it allââ"šÂ¬Ã‚. Another point is that LFS owners put a lot of time and hard work into their stores, I would assume that, this line of work is like having a second marriage and they spend a good deal of the day messing with the livestock and know how everything is doing in their store. I don't want to go to their store and point out this and that. If I see dead fish, coral problems, etc I assume its known about and will be taken care of. It must get redundant and demanding after a while no matter how much you love the hobby. Also I only tend to shop where I see the owner in the store at least 3 out of the 5 times I visit, These stores are also the stores on our LFS that support NFMAS list.

Mike good point I also do the same

Steve,

I too don't want to go into a LFS and point out things I see. I am still learning and I am SURE they know more than me. So for me it is simple, if I do not like the product and presentation I leave.

So is the rock you got down south alive?

Mike

nope, they are sun bleached coral skeletons. I got some nice showpieces for my desk at work. There were coral skeletons all over the beach and they were still in great condition. I have some pieces that look like frags that died in a tank with all their ridges and polyps intact and still quite sharp to the touch.

FWIW I was in Atlantis this weekend and they were pretty busy, but they were still able to answer my questions and help me out.

You can't please everyone all the time, all you can do is try. But to not give a second chance/look to a store is almost assanine.
Question, You drive by store "A" on your way to store "B". You don't like store "A" for what ever reason. Let's just say your looking at corals. Store "B"has some nice stuff. John Doe at store "B" tells you that John Dough at store "A" has more of a selection & some killer stuff. Do you acknowledge him & go by store "B" or do you ignore his statement & blow off going by store "A" for whatever reason & possibly miss out on something really awesome?

I will admit that I do have my favorite stores as I am sure most people do. I also will admit that I am picker than most customers. If the livestock is not presented so I can see and exam it I will not buy anything. So often I "ignore his statement & blow off going by store A".

I do from time to time visit all stores.

This is a funny thing, I'm sure most LFS have their favorite customers & I'm sure there are some customers that are a royal pain. Being a REEFER myself, before owning , when I'm in the area of a LFS, I stop in to see what they have, even if that place isn't my favorite. You never know what you might find. Every place is different. So it's not the lfs that's losing out, it's the individual that does.

Speaking of variety when are you all (LFS) going to start selling frags? I rarely buy a colony because of a few reasons. 1) Not having room for a new colony in my tank. I also hate bonding large pieces to LR with aquamend 2) Not knowing how its going to do in the tank (a 10-15 dollar loss is better than a 40-100 dollar loss) 3) I get the enjoyment of watching a coral grow from near nothing to a huge colony, and that coral fits in better and looks better because it grows around everything else than if a bought a huge colony and tried to fit it in with existing coral. I can also grow 2 or more color corals very close to each other this way. I would think that selling small frags would be just as profitable or more because if you were to sell a colony for lets say 50 bucks, thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s just 50 bucks or you could frag it, get 5-10 pieces and sell them from 10-15 bucks each. Frags may even sell faster than the original colony. But this is just an Idea.
