ATO container causing cyano?

I've been battling cyano for the better part of 3 months or so and I can't really eliminate the root cause. I have a 40 gallon breeder with a 20 gallon sump. Between the rocks and the sand, I figure total water volume is around 40 gallons or so.

I've been using BRS gfo for 4-5 months now. I use 11 tablespoons in my reactor. I feed rod's food once a day (about the size of a dime) to a clown, watchman goby, royal gramma and a midas blenny. CUC wise, I have a conch, snails and one hermit. My nitrate readings have always read 0 via api ( if not zero then 5) and my phosphate is 0.00 via hanna low range phosphate reader. I've only used ro/di since the start or distilled water from walmart if I'm in a pinch.

My question is could my ATO container (trashcan from home depot) be causing phosphate/TDS problems and my reader does not pick it up do to the cyano using it? The trashcan does not have a lid and I don't have a handheld TDS meter to test the water in the trashcan.

I work in the oilfield so I cannot do daily siphons/waterchanges. Or weekly for that matter. I'm finally getting on a more consistent schedule so I will be gone for 20 days and home for 10. Could someone please give me some suggestions to try and overcome this? I've never had it on the rocks just on the sand.

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

OK thanks.
This might be a stupid question but will the trashcan say food grade or have any special markings on it? Also do I need a lid?

Do you think that is what could be causing the recurring cyano problem? I know doing more frequent water changes would help but unfortunately I can't. So is there anything else you can think of that I could try and do?

Thanks again.
