So... I'm building a simple & not so pretty ATS to go over my sump. It is the simple vertical style. A 10.5" wide by ~16" high screen (landscape stuff from Lowes) will be suspended from a slotted 1" PVC pipe using zip ties. It will be illuminated on one side with two warm white LED household bulbs in incandescent utility reflectors. An 11" X 18" X 3" acrylic box that is open at the top & bottom will guard against water splash issues and provide a way to suspend the pipe & screen. I plan on supplying water from the return area of the sump to the ATS with a Maxi-jet 1200 so maybe 250-275 GPH of flow. The water will flow over the screen back into the sump. I have a timer that will run the lights ~18 hours per day.
Now's the time before I spend any money. Please comment. Thanks.
I ended up building a roughly 30 degree trough rather than a vertical ATS. The vertical model was just too noisy. Since I was only lighting one side anyway, it seemed to make sense. It's pretty much dead quiet.
I bought a 16w warm white (advertised @ 3000k) LED bulb about 4" above the mesh to light the thing. The bulb runs really cool. An MJ1200 is supplying water from my return area.
I've lowered the white lights slightly in the DT to make sure the ATS has brighter lights in the proper range. I've also lowered the carbon dose to let nutrients rise a little.
It's been running for 3 days and the mesh is still white like new. Just have to wait I guess.
