attack and picture

My octopus finally ate the molly. The fish has always been in the tank, if the he got too close the octopus would shoot water at it to make it go away. Well today he jumped off his rock and in the wrestled the fish. The fish was an adult molly, twice the size of the octopus. There were eight arms flying all around. They struggled for five seconds before the octopus was able to grab a rock so he could take control. With a hold on a rock the octopus was able to pull the fish down and wrap all his arms around it. They say freshwater fish are bad for octopuses but this fish has been in the tank for at least three months, hopefully he'll be okay. I bet the octopus is going to grow a lot after this. I also wonder how much of the fish will actually get eaten. Attached to this post is a picture of the octopus trying to eat the fish

Here is another picture of the octopus in his dark red/brown hunting colors, also showing off his false eye spot.

Picture Perfection!

Picture Perfection!

Rudiger,

Thank you so much for posting those pics. I'm a sucker for octo pics and videos and I wonder why more people don't post pics. Then again, our third child is almost 6 months old and we've taken less than a roll of film on him - and he's a human!

Thanks again for posting them. The usual question - what kind of a camera?

Kip

Im glad you liked them! Those pictures are frame grabs from a movie taken with a Canon Elura digital camcorder. For a movie of the same octopus check out http://www.tonmo.com/images/vids/octopus1.mpg This video is hosted at www.tonmo.com, a great ceph website. There is a image gallery there and a video gallery.

Lack of octopus pics is probably because some octopuses are a little camera shy. Not mine tho. I havnt posted pics in a while due to computer troubles.

Hi Pat,

Thought your photo of your octopus in hunting colors was very good, too. Octos are difficult subjects to photograph because of their ability to blend with their surroundings. Also, they can at times look like blobs! So a good pic is an achievement!

Liked the pic with the molly, too - real action photo!

I've only gotten a few photos of my bimac. Mostly because he only comes out when it's dark. Also, I don't use a flash (to avoid the ink) so most of my pictures come out poor.

Still, this is my best shot yet:
