The Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative's Our Florida Reefs Community Planning Process

The Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative was developed in 2003 to address the status of our reefs. This team, made up of stakeholders from local, state and federal government, academia, environmental non-government organizations, fishing, diving and watersports, private business and citizens at large created a Local Action Strategy of 140 projects with the overall goal to develop a comprehensive management strategy for the region. The Our Florida Reefs Community Planning Process is a transparent, inclusive, bottom-up process that brings together representative from similar stakeholder groups to develop a prioritized list of management actions that will be put to the applicable agencies in hopes of improving and maintaining the coral reef ecosystem and surrounding habitat.

About Meghan:

Meghan Balling is currently the Fishing, Diving and Other Uses Coordinator for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Coral Reef Conservation Program. While attending the University at Buffalo, she received a B.S. studying coral bleaching at the Keys Marine Lab in Marathon, FL, followed by an M.S. investigating coral-algal interactions and population genetics of soft corals at the National Undersea Research Center in Key Largo and aboard the University of Miami's (RSMAS) R/V FG Walton Smith around Great Abaco, Bahamas. Upon moving to Florida, she began work with the US Geological Survey's Everglades Monitoring and Assessment Program (MAP) examining seagrass populations and recovery, followed by a short stint at Biscayne National Park undertaking sea turtle conservation as well as establishing baseline data for benthic and fish populations for use in their General Management Plan process.
