I read the article in RHM you wrote.. Nicely done. I think it's great that more people are trying to expand the possibilities of this hobby. I have never even seen one in person, but have kept an eye open at several wholesalers..

So you're the one that stole it right from under my nose... I had it in my shopping cart and it disappeared! :((

Anyway, congrats... I've been looking for one for over a year now.

My friend owns the one which has been featured in reefing magazine... It's amazing, but very hard to take care of.

Needs a lot of spot feeding... At least 3 times a week * ton of mysis... Also keep it in low light area!

aalhait,

I know just how you feel...trust me ;) I've lost my fair share of DD items throughout the years and it always sucks, so I feel your pain.

Your friend Jason has a beautiful specimen....I hope my specimen heals/grows to be that beautiful someday.

I'm feeding my Archohelia *3 times a day or more* to get it healthy again. My specimen is just in too bad of shape to be feeding 3 times a week IMO. My particular specimen requires some serious care to get it to pull through, or it will continue to slowly wither away.

I'm actually a little shocked DD would release this coral for sale (and for the price I paid for it) considering the state I got it in. Everything I ever got from DD in the past was in the best of health. They always sell top notch livestock IME. I hope my specimen will make a full recovery.

Good luck obtaining a specimen. Maybe your friend will break you off a branch, and you can tell us how well the propagated branch does. It would be interesting to see how well a propagated piece of this coral does (especially if fed well). Talking Jason into that might be easier said then done though depending on how good of a friend he is to you! :lolspin:

I have two friends already fighting over who gets the first frag, and my specimen is barely holding on to life as they fight. :worried:

I know... I saw the state it was in when you got it and even in the picture at DD was not soo good to start.

The flesh is already not covering the entire skeleton which is a sign of under feeding.

The god thing is I managed to find and order 4 (yes 4 large pieces) and I'm waiting to get the shipped... Been waiting 2 months to see how I can import them. And I am fearing for the shipping procedure. So I pray i will get them OK.

My friend has been reluctant to frag his even though Jason actually gave a frag away to somebody in the Reef club here... Who actually passed it to somebody else to take it because he could not keep taking care of it. (It's a difficult one to maintain with the amount of feeding it requires)

I have received total bad shipments from DD, but most of the time they are great! I've had shipments where everything was dead within a day! And I use them a lot!

BTW, the coral does NOT grow fast (if at all). Jason has had it for more than 6 months now and it has NOT grown out at all... So tell your friends who are waiting for frags to start looking elsewhere. :(

aalhait,

Best of luck with those 4 large pieces...I hope they make the shipping process for you. Would love to see pics when you get them...sounds like an amazing find!

I'm lucky I'm able to feed mine several times throughout the day. I hope that is enough to get it healthy again. I'm a bit discouraged though that most info says growth is slow, and the fact that your friend has such a perfect specimen but sees no real growth at all. My specimen is in such bad shape I'd settle on just getting the coenosarc to reconnect with the existing polyps again. Thanks for the info.

Update

Update

It's been a little over a week since my last pics were posted, and I wanted to update/share the progress on this coral so far.

Luckily my CUC cleaned off the receded areas on the bare skeleton that showed some light nuisance algae growth when I first obtained the coral (hopefully allowing the coenosarc to regrow).

I do see some improvement in the condition of the coral. I have been *aggresively* feeding. I know it's only been a little over a week, but I'm starting to see areas of the coenosarc to improve/grow. It's hard to capture on my camera, but I've seen some growth within the areas of coenosarc. Some of the new growth is "clear" tissue, so it doesn't show up well on the pictures.

Polyp extension has always been great (day/night) unless disturbed. It accepts any food that can fit in the mouth of the polyp. This coral eats like a pig.

I know it has only been a little over a week, but so far so good. I just want to have photo documentation on the success/failure I have with trying to rescue/grow this beautiful coral. Here are a few pics a week and a half into this project I took on:

I'm Creeping Back to Life...

I'm Creeping Back to Life...

A little over two weeks now, and the coenosarc is *definately* showing much improvement from the heavy feedings. If you check the original condition of the coral in the pics I posted when I first got the coral, and these current pics you can see much improvement in the health of this coral.

The areas of light green on the coral skeleton actually have a thin film of cream colored coenosarc tissue growing on it, but it doesn't show up well in the photos. The dark green areas are still bare skeleton.

I was disapointed when I heard how slow this coral grows. The few people lucky enough to obtain this coral thus far who chimed in aquired much healthier specimens then I did. I'm very pleased at the fast growth of the coenosarc with my heavy feedings. Time will tell when/if the coenosarc fully connects. If it does, and if I continue with the heavy feedings I hope I'll see new polyp/skeletal growth.

Right now I'm just grateful to see such improvement in the coenosarc in a rather short period of time. To continue with the photo documentation here are the latest pics:

Mine is starting to get a pink base. Is anyone else experiencing this?

It is a much stronger pink if you see it in real life, the camera is not picking it up.

Nice pics SanJuan...that is very interesting!

I wish I had a base...any base...I don't care what color it is . What do you guys think is causing this pink coloration in the coral tissue?

Here is the latest update pics of my coral. The coenosarc is starting to reconnnect to other living polyps. The coral is getting alot healthier in the short time I have had it:

Thank you for the kind words uhuru and SanJuan....I appreciate it! This coral has been a labor of love, and I'm pleased with the progress I've made with it so far (in a little under a month). I hope to have continued success with it, and get this little gem back to full health.

It's alot of work. I do enjoy looking back on the pics I documented from the beginning, and looking at it today to see the progress I've made with it so far. It gives me incentive to keep on going. Thanks again!

Definitely looking better! Looks like the trick is heavy feeding - which is not really a surprise. It's always good to see another non-photo coral added to the success list. Keep up the good work.
