Hi all,

I have a few Aussie Acant. that i purchased over a year ago. They were doing fine until the last few months when they started all to recede. I have no idea why as my water parameters are very good with many SPS corals thriving with amazing colors. Here is a photo of one of the Acant. any idea??:

Thanks.

Any new fish, possibly nipping at the coral?

Algea issues? Sometimes the algea irritates the coral so tissue recedes.

What are your water parameters? A water change is never a bad idea.

Hi,

The first i thought was sweeper tentacles indeed, i was watching a suspected euphyllia nearby but could not see yet, i will keep on looking.
Regrading water change, i did already 3!

BTW i had a same problem with my Australian Scoly and found out that one of the chalices had a 6 inches sweeper tentacle!!! you should all be aware of these corals as they do not look fleshy during the day time and then at night you won't believe what comes out!

Do you feed them? Is your system ULN? I doubt it's being attacked as the rescission is all the way around the edges on both sides. "my parameters" are all ok. Doesn't mean much to us what are there? When is the last time your calibrated your refractometer? You'd be surprised how easy it is to start mistesting out of habit. I'd have a second person run the tests and see if the results are different.

Hi,

I have other Achant. in other regions in my tank which are fine.
Regarding parameters, i am working with the top of the line kits, i have a Hanna digital refractometer which reads 1.026. I am using Hanna digital PO4 meter which reads zero, Alk. is constantly 6.5

Did you notice something with VSV affecting Acanth? I am trying to find causes... this is wierd guys, the rest of the system looks fine other than a hydnophora in the other end of my tank which also recedes.

Sometimes i feel like Dr. house chasing a ghost... there must be somethig out there... probably in the water chemistry:hmm2:

Can you take a close up picture of the edge of recession please?
I recently got hit buy a very aggressive and strange eroding white band disease which effected my LPS across numerous genera. Acanthastrea lordhowensis seem to be especially sensitive to this disease. I have not been able to find any definitive information regarding this issue.

I have had great success with manual removal of the white band. It looks almost like a layer of sponge (Porifera) that will be closely hugging the remaining healthy tissue- slimy, white, gelatinous matter. Siphoning it off of the colony and then dipping the coral in Revive worked very well for me. Repeated treatments was necessary for some individuals in my case.

I can't tell if you are seeing a similar issue, but I thought I would offer these thoughts. Dipping the coral (Revive would be my preference) is a great way to discourage the recession.

Might have some kind of infection. Try treating it with Coral RX. I've had the same problem in the past and used Coral RX with fantastic results.
