australian pineapple fish

I did a search and came up with zilch. Only one thread and four posts in it.

Any info out there on pineapple fish? Size, food, reef or fowlr setup? Tank mates?

Cleidopus gloriamaris.

Eight to nine inches long and will eat anything that fits in its mouth.

A good fish for a peaceful, low-light FOWLR...preferably with a sizable cave for it and no small fish or inverts. They're not the most hardy of fish; seem to have some collection problems. Once established and eating, they seemed to do well, but I lost more than a few in the first few days after arrival. I've never kept them long-term, just in the retail environment.

Think of them like a squirrelfish. Nocturnal predators. They wouldn't bother coral, but not a lot of people want reefs without small fish or inverts!

A few locals have kept them. If you provide the right environment they are not that hard to keep...However they don't belong in a brightly lit reef tank without cover eg a bonsai reef.

Since they are timid initially and nocturnal, they will feel at home in dark caves or under a large overhang. They love live glass shrimp which you feed at night but can later wean to daytime feeds and on frozen foods (this will be a bit of work though).

As an aside I think many are collected from cooler water, so I wouldn't keep them at reef temperatures. To sum up, would make a really interesting biotope specimen.

Thanks for the detailed responses. I am not really ready to set up another species tank nor have the room currently. Better to ask then find out after the fact though!
