Authentic Reef VS. Coral Garden

My question for today is, how can we become better reef keepers? I am guilty as are many of us for having a coral garden rather than an authentic representation of nature. I for one think that I would gain a great deal of satisfaction from finally living up to my pre-setup stock list. How many of us have started a tank thinking I just want to buy a few frags and grow them into mothers without overcrowding the tank just to go completely the opposite direction every time they see something awesome in a LFS? I for one am guilty of deviating from my plans. I wish I had better vision and patience, but maybe this next time will be different. What do you think? Have you broken your rules of engagement that you set up before your box was filled with water?

I broke the rules the next day and I think there few people that have not. At least this time I am all SPS. I thought stopping the smoking habit was bad.

Yes

Yes

I have broken my self promises, but this time its going differently, "no really" I am holding back on any frag and just putting 1 coral for every 5 gallons or so. You read it hear on reefcentral!!!!

I haven't gone nuts with coral yet, but after snorkeling in Hawaii I sure feel guilty about keeping fish in my tank.

I definately impulse buy fish and won't be doing that again...

For shame! It sounds like we need a compulsive coral buyers support group.

Hi, my name is ScubaTC and I'm a compulsive coral buyer. :wavehand: I've been clean for 5 days and counting!

Your suppose to have a plan ? I though the plan was to puchase corals and fill you tank. Its cool how there are so many to buy. I always tell my wife I could be spending in a bar somewhere, Its a good thing we have this hobby I could be in an AA meeting right now. :)

You know, my front and back yard are not an accurate representation of nature. They are what I want them to be. So is my tank.

Funny, I started with a plan, but now it's changed. I admire the natural looking tanks, but I accept that my compulsive buying is going to make sure mine is as full of as many different types as I can find, untill I run out of room :)

Give them room to grow.

Give them room to grow.

Lots of coral is nice, up until the point they start killing each other, me I'm looking for that nice big growth from some select colonies.

I am thinking about removing all but 10 SPS colonies and open up more areas in the tank. I really like the looks of SunnyX's tank.
Not going to be easy to do. Which ones? Fastest growers, color, shape?
