average water loss

I searched the forums but found nothing I could quickly find about this.

I have just set up my 75 g tank this past weekend and i was wondering on average how much water should evaporate a day? I know where I lost some of my water, my skimmer acted up and over flowed, but I have still lost a bit of water My tank has no leaks and I checked the rest of my plumbing and I have no leaks there. For the amount lost I am thinking it is evaporation but I would just like some confirmation. About how much is lost in a 24 hour period for a 75 gallon.

lots of things go into evaporation - I usually go through about 32-64oz two big stadium cups a day for my total system volume of 36 gallons

This will depend on a lot of factors, not just the size of the tank.

Hotter lights will evaporate more water. Air moving over the surface will evaporate more water. If your house is very dry or very humid, it will evaporate more or less water.

I read somewhere that the average is 1-5 gallons per day. I also have a 75, and I would say I am adding about a gallon every 24 hours. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

An ATO with a reservoir will help even out the fluctuations...if that is a concern.

thanks! new tank. though I did check for leaks I am still ... nervous of leaks and thought I might still have a small one after I did a check of the whole system.
I did get new LEDs, I ran T5's in my 44. I haven't been running the humidifier this winter. and I have the surface water moving more then I did in my 44 too.

so losing about 1/8 inch of water is not uncommon then for a 24 hour period?

I can take a deep breath then.

Yeah, that's not much at all really. I have a 75 and in the winter I can lose 2-3 gallons per day but I have lots of surface agitation and I run MH lighting.

The summer time or when I don't run the furnace I get about a gallon per day.

my 75 gallon lost anywhere from 1 - 4 gallons of water a day, depending on the season, weather, and other factors.

That's usually how I realize my ATO container is empty. I'll walk by the tank and notice the display is a bit low. If the display is low, that means my ATO needs filled again. (no sump on my tank)

gallon a day in an open-topped 50 at 80 degrees...but ambient humidity also matters.
My sump shares a basement with my library so I use a dehumidifier unit (Frigidaire) in the rainy season. Keeps it proper down there.

30gal tank with Chinese black box LED light.
Open top, I find we loose 1/2 gallon every day.There is a dehumidifier down the hall running for most of the working day.

To combat the loss I have a little container hanging to the back and slightly above the water line. It dips RO water into the tank throughout the day, about 1 drop every 5 minutes. The container gets filled on a steady and predictable 24hr cycle.

I would expect to lose 1 - 1.5 gallons per day in a 75g tank. It can wildly vary based on your circulation, surface exposure, humidity, etc. though.

I loose about 6 gallons a day in my whole system but one of my tanks has a 8 foot Circle open top... my ato tank is 50 gallons....

A little less than that on my glass-top 75 gallon at home.

I (sadly) do not have a library like others here....

It will vary by tank and household humidity.
My 12g nano loses about 1/2 gallon a day. My 350 loses about 5.
