Awesome arco colour but brown polyps

I have seen some that the polyps did brown out, and then regained their original color. I think it depends on lighting changes and water parameters.

Typed from my phone because I have nothing better to do.

It is sort of annoying... The colour is great but once PE (99% of time) the whole acro is covered in brown!

Hope there is a solution

Will upload pic tmr

PE vs no PE
The photo didnt really pick up the colour tho, it should be green with blue tips...

and apparently the polyps are in blxxdy dark brown... :deadhorse1:

Try hitting it with more flow to blow the polyps around and expose the base color a bit more. What are your nitrates & phosphates reading?

usually when i pick up a frag or colony for purchase, i look more on the polyps color than the body; not totally saying that, with my water parameters and lighting plus my husbandry, i can retain the polyp color, but definitely i have a better chance of making the body color up.

No3 and po4 are well under control. My other SPS are doing fine. Didnt realise the polyps are brown when the time i bought it, wouldnt have bought if i knew. Maybe i should keep a butterfly fish to have a few love bites throughout the day to avoid PE. LOL

Joncver ~ agreed. But in HK, people sort of crazy for SPS (bit like anywhere i guess anyway)and by the time you wait to see PE all the good ones should have been taken.

I just bought it for about a week. Not sure what i can really do now...

This tells us nothing

Yea but what do you exactly need to know dude?

Frankly havnt tested for about a month but i personally dont trust the readings too much. Rather i use my mates like hair algae, algae, colour of the SPS and etc who will tell me the PO4 and NO3 level pretty accurately.

I believed they have always been next to zero since i set up the tank a year ago with biopellet and GFO.

Cheers.

Whether or not you have nusiance algae wont tell you your phos levels either.

I have no hair algae and not using GFO.....what would your guess my phos levels be? And I feed heavily

True.

But i guess it is all by experience on individual tank and personally believes.

I play around with the amount of biopellet, its flow rate, use of GFO, carbon and etc, which results in different behaviours of animals and algae in the DT. From there, it sort of gives me a clue on what is the best for my corals.

As such i start not to worry about testing PO4 and No3...

Well I have 0 on phoshpates.

But you never know. I test weekly for phosphates and once in awhile I will get .03-.04 reading.

And some acros have brown polyps. I have an acro verde with brown polyps.

Just how it goes. I've bought many corals based on interesting looking coral polyps, but rarely do they hold them outside of just the tips, and those corals are few and for between more corals just have brown polyps or white.

Thanks for all your info.

My experience on another deep water SPS - was interesting - it came with brown polpys as well and for some reason my majestic angel always liked to pick on its polyps, which obviously no PE except night time. Few months later, the majestic died from iches. The SPS PE again but with white polpys. And more importantly they stay white that has already been about a few months.
