The "package" from Tampa Bay saltwater is nothing short of amazing. I am starting a 300 gallon tank and have done extensive research on what "rock" to use. There is a lot of information to sort through out there and it was hard to make a decision. I decided to go with Tampa Bay because they claimed to ship their rock in water and alive when when you get it. I also felt the "package", if it was all it claimed to be was the way to go. I have to tell people, it is all it claims to be and more. I picked the first part of my package up four days ago. There were 21 boxes, each heavy duty cardboard box was lined with a styrofoam box, inside the styrofoam box were 4 to 5 very heavy duty plastic bags, each one inside the other. Inside each inner bag was a little piece of the ocean including sea water, beautiful rock teaming with life. It was unreal and a blast to unpack it. After removing the rock from the bags my daughter went through the small bits of sand and stuff in the bottom of the bag and found lots of snails, hermit crabs, a few shrimp, we even ended up with an awesome sea cucumber.
This shipment went from Tampa Bay to Rapid City SD via airline. It probably transfered two times at least. Out of 21 boxes we had two that had a small bit of leakage. Each of the two still had plenty of water to keep the rock alive.
The packing method Tampa Bay uses is obviously the key to their success. It was easy to see that a huge amount of work and planning(and money) goes into each shipment. This company has figured out how to ship rock and sand that is truly alive. It has been in my tank for four days with 0 spike in amonia. Live rock and sand shipped in water is the way to go and Tampa Bay has it figured out!
