Awesome Tank Stand

I've got some pictures of my new stand that was custom built for me by another RC and Richmond Reef Club member (Thanks Christian). The construction on this thing is absolutely amazing.

Here is the first shot that he sent. All os the lumber was planed down to be perfectly true and square.

Boxed columns on each of the corners. You can't tell from this picture but the edges of the column pieces are mitered where they come together. From the inside, it looks like they are one solid piece of wood.

I wish that I could take credit for that shop but it belongs to a friend from the Richmond Reef Club. His ReefCentral id is "chris dumont". He built the stand exactly to my specs and it looks like a high end piece of furniture although I don't think I could have found anything at a fine furniture store that would carry the weight of 6500 pound of water, rock, and glass.

Chris hand picked each of the two-bys and then planed them down. I've made shelves before but they never looked anything like this.

You can see that the back, which will be against my wall, is skinned with plywood to afford even more rigidity. This was cut after the stand was at my house to allow access to electrical and plumbing connections.

Besides the door on the front, these doors on the end open giving me a clear 25" to be able to slide in a large sump.

The top is covered with 3/4" plywood. The rim that you see in that last picture is secured with 7 countersunk screws but even without the screws it slips on and fits like a glove. I will take the rim off when the tank comes (hopefully tomorow) so that we have a smooth flat surface to just slide the tank right onto the stand. Then I'll replace the rim and it will fit snug to the tank and hid the steel rim around the bottom of the tank.

It's tough to get a feel for the size of the stand from the workshop pictures. Here it is being delivered in the back of a pick-up truck. The stand is 78" by 39" by 38" tall.

The white pipes here are 6" PVC that are hooked to a 240 cfm in-line exhaust fan that is going to be inside the matching hood. The top of the tank will come to just below the lower pipe.

Thanks, the reef central member whoo built the stand for me is also the guy who suggested that I set the tank against a 45 deg wall in the room. It works really well in the space (better than what I had originally planned).

If you look at the picture with the end doors open, you can see a 2" PVC pipe coming out of the wall. This pipe runs 11 feet through the wall to outside and then underground to a drain. I'm going to plumb a drain from my tank to this to make water changes easier.

You can also see a wire coming out of the wall by the pipe. This wire will have a water sensor attached to it and it is wired into my home security system. If there is a leak under the tank it will trigger the alarm and Vector Security will call my cell phone.

Working on a tank with a built in drain is great. Well worth the effort to instal one. And having a flood sensor that will call you in such an event is priceless.

Well the plumbers were here today and put my utility sink in that 3' x 9' closet seen behind the white double doors in the picture above. I'm still woking out how to get a 200gal vat, 3 40gal breeders and 20gal tall tank in the closet with them.
