How old are hippo's usually before they reach sexual maturity?

Congrats on this last batch. Those horses are amazing, looks like it is time to plumb in that 18 gallon.

I believe it's 5 to 6 months for sexual maturity( have to look it up tommorow) I know it's typically 14 to 28 days gestation. 3 days of courtship. It's really interesting to watch. The males get a purplish coloration on the pouch and puff it out to impress a female . The males wrestle a little and butt heads alittle to help them lay claim to female. Once paired the male and female hang together, link their tails, spiral up and down in the water ,bump bellies and eventually the female injects her eggs into the male's marsupium. He fertilizes them there. Capillaries grow for blood supply and the eggs embed . 2 to 4 weeks later; more like 2 with mine ) and the babies are born . It can take 2 to 3 days to push them all out. 2 of my hatches occured ove the course of an hour or two in teh early am, one was split with about a third of the hatch in the evening and the rest in the am. Feeding is a bit of work but I'm getting a routine down. Hope I can help them survive in reasonably good numbers.
