Baby Brittlestar

My brittlestar had babies. My daughter was looking at my tank last night and saw something moving on a rock. She got all excited and wanted me to see it and asked what it was. Sure enough, a baby brittlestar about 1/2" across. My big one is almost a foot across and lives under a rock near the front of my tank. His tentacles reach out on all sidesscouting for munchies, especially at feeding time.

It's probably not a baby, just a mini variety. I don't think brittle stars are known to reproduce in aquariums. There are some small brittles that never get over an inch wide (arms and all), and some that stay even smaller. When I took out a bunch of macro I had in one of my tanks, I was amazed at how many of these guys were in there - I had never seen them before.

Micro brittles will actually breed quite well in the aquarium. Head over to Project DIBS and see if you can identify which ones you have.
