Baby gold-rimmed Maroons (8 weeks old)

hi Everyone

I'm trying to raise the frye from my Gold-rimmed Maroon Clownfish. They lay eggs regularly, but after several clutches, I've only raised 6 frye past metamorphisis. I suck.

Here are the results. 6 little juveniles. They fight and bicker with each other, but remain relatively peaceful so far. They're all in a 10g grow-out tank. Each is smaller than my pinky fingernail.

Take care,

Bjorn

The proud parents (who have no clue some of their babies survived)...

wow cool pics. I hope mine get busy soon! What did you use to feed them the first two weeks?

algae for rotifers
rotifers for larva then brine shrimp then cyclopeze?

hi Ed

Yes... Here's the feeding schedule...

- Day 1-21: greenwater-enriched Rotifers (sneak in ground flakes here & there.)

- Day 11-21: Rotifers & Live baby brine shrimp (but, in hindsight, I'd feed them less BBS- and I'll use decapsulated brine. I endured many losses at this stage.)

- Day 21+: ground flakes, Cyclopeeze., frozen & live rotifers. (They're hardy and easy to care for at this stage.)

I'm no pro. Phil (Phender) and MarinaP have serious experience. I still have much to learn.

Take care,

Bjorn

Flamehawkfish, Congrats! Don't be too hard on yourself. GSM are not the easiest to raise, and when you do get them past meta they want to try to kill their brothers and sisters right away. I read an article about a University in Maryland that got a $75,000 grant to breed clownfish, and after six months they had two baby false percs. Heck you and I, and a lot of other people have done better, faster, and with less money and equipment. I bet your thinking you might be able to raise a few more if somebody was giving you 75 grand to do it! Heck, in less you want to sell the babies commercially, with a few more runs you may have all you can handle anyways. Again congrats on what you have done.

To those giving me props,

Thank you. I appreciate it. When only 6 survivors remain from hundreds of 'potentials', it's a bit exasperating. I'll get better though.

My 'Good Kharma' Goal: to introduce as many new marine fish to the hobby as what I've taken away from the ocean. Trust me; after 15 years in the hobby, I have a long way to go.

Nevertheless, they are kinda' cute and full of character. They're battling each other, but not to the death. They're forming a reluctant family...

Here's a pic of 1-2 day old larvae. The entire 10g tank is swarming with hundreds of larvae at this stage...

Hang in there maroons are tough. They are small and touchy and seem to take forever to get to a decent size. One day you will have a tank full of 5 day old babies then the next day a tank full of dead clowns.

I've got a pair of GSM's I'm hoping will start spawning soon.

what algae? nanno?
how did you collect the eggs/fry?
do you feed gut loaded rots or just put rots in the fry tank and feed them?

oh, and more pics too :)

Here's a few more pics.
It's tough to take photos of the speedy juveniles.

Also, below I've posted a pic of my greenwater/rotifer/larval tank set-up. Pretty basic.

To answer one person's question, yes, I feed the rotifers greenwater (live Nannochlor.) first. After straining them, I fed them to the larvae. Other than a random splash here and there, I did not mix any greenwater into the larval tank. However, I'm open to that approach. Based on others' experience, I know that it can work...

A few juveniles...

To update everyone, I now have 4 remaining juvenile gold-rimmed Maroon clownfish. They're now about 6-7 months old.

I split them up into 2 pairs. When they were all together, they fought incessantly. At one point, I had 6 in one tank, but 2 got killed by dominant fish. Here are a couple pics. I think that their bars are starting to turn gold:

RE: I would recommend a w/c.

Hmmm....I hear ya. I'm sort of taking your advice tongue-in-cheek b/c it's kinda' obvious. I just upgraded my main tank, so the baby maroons haven't gotten enough attention.

Here's the new main tank (where the parents live):

It's a 95g wave all-glass tank.
