My clowns have had their first set of eggs. I am wanting to try to raise them but dont know what to do. Have read lots of info on reef central but needing more on what to do once they hatch. What would be better, using a breeding net in the main tank to seperate them or to have a seperate tank just for them. And if a seperate tank, what is needed for the setup?? Where can I get Rotifers?

>>You'll kill/damage them in you use a net.

>>Need a book Joyce Wilkerson's is good. Was like $20 on amazon

seahorsesource.com too

FWIW, getting rotifers ramped up quickly can be tough, order them ASAP or search them out locally.

Here's one other note, I cannot personally verify as I haven't tried it, but I've heard that clowns can sometimes take brine nauplii as early as the morning post hatch, if not the start of Day 2. You'll lose a LOT, but some can be done. BY NO MEANS ANY GUARANTEE, and with my Onyx Percs, well, 4 batches and currently 7 viable juveniles to show for my efforts....I guess don't worry too much if you botch this batch, there will be more to screw up too!

To really get a self-sustaining setup for live feeds to rear one or two broods at a time takes about a month IF everything goes well...I'm talking culturing your own phyto as well as the rotifers. Most folks don't seem to be doing that, instead relying on the algae pastes. Just have to weigh your options...they probably both cost the same to get started with, but my personal theory is that phyto pastes are "dead"and can decay/pollute if not eaten...live phyto doesn't have that "overfeeding" issue.

Good luck!

Thank you all for the responses! I ordered the book and spoke w/a store in town, was told to set up a 10 gal tank w/sponge filter and a couple pieces of live rock to help filter. Was told to add tank water to fill and to keep temp the same. Also have a brine shrimp hatcher running with it. Is the info given by the store correct? Or will the live rock die and release into the tank because of the lack of water movement?

A lot of folks would say that all you need is an air-feed - that's how I've reared them through metamorphasis and that's how my GBG's are going right now as well. The sponge filter / live rock is more for the "growout" phase of things.

FWIW,

Matt

So what I have set up sounds like it will be ok. 10 gal, sponge filter, some live rock, lights & heater. So I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. How often will they breed now that they have started?

Lose the LR for the first two weeks after hatch, before metamorphosis clown fry cannot seem to back up and love to delve into crevases where they subsequently get trapped and drown. Another one to look out for with pre-meta juvvies is the bit of water that gets trapped above an airline if the airline floats at the suface and against the side of the tank.
