Baby Seahorses

Five weeks and four days ago I had my first batch of babies -- Noel was here when they were born. I managed to save 30 from my community tank (other inhabitants were going nuts eating them!). Lost them gradually until only one was left -- he survived to exactly four weeks. Todd Garner of Atlantis Marine World told me once past three weeks I was over the hump -- unfortunately, I lost him at four.

Today at around 5:30p he (yes, the male is the one who carries in a pouch, and gives birth) gave me another batch. This time I saved a lot more.

My webcam is now on the "baby bowl" -- yup, looks like they're going around on a Ferris Wheel! LOL Here's the access info:

Ok, it's back on the babies again. I had taken it off and put it back on the my Display Tank. Watching tiny Seahorses go round and round was a bit boring to say the least! But apparently people missed out on seeing them, so I'll leave it on them through tomorrow -- then back on the adults and their tank mates -- lights are on there from about 1pm to 1am.

These baby seahorses are a serious challenge to raise. I can't even count all the fresh water fish I've bred and raised the fry to adults, but all that experience doesn't help at all when it comes to salt water fish.

Most lived for about two weeks, then there were huge overnight die-offs. A few hung in a few more days... and then there was ONE! But I swear he looked like he was going to make it -- he was a strong swimmer and a good eater -- but the day the guys were here to help lift the tank onto the stand he didn't look that great, but still alive -- next day (Sunday) he was dead at three weeks and one day old. So... we will try again -- next batch due in a week or two.

Regina is still in the hospital. They're now doing a cardiac work-up, and a GI work-up. My own theory is still too many pain killers. But we'll just let them do their thing and see what they come up with. I'm betting on, "Umm... we don't know. Everything's normal." LOL Thanks for asking.

What type of set up do you have them in? include specs. What are you feeding them? Listen if seahorses can survive in the water you got them from they should be able to make it in your tank! LOL

Pain killers can definitely have bad effects but who knows..usually it's either you take too many and die or they progressively do damage mostly liver damage from what I've heard. If she doesn't have any liver problems odds are it's probably something else. Either way you guys are in my thoughts and I wish you all the best I'm sure she will be fine.
