back from the dead button polyp (pics)

I have them the size of a baseball. I started feeding mine with clyclopezze and an eye dropper.

tulkas71. Do you clean you're canister filter often? If not, that can be a cause of you're high nitrates. Mine only took 3 months to grow that big since they were the size of you're updated ones, since feeding them every other day. The green in the center spred ot to the skirts, now the skirts are neon green.Keep us updated and good luck. Mike

I wouldnt stress to much about the nitrates. After doing the swap out on the substrate your system is probaly going through mini cycle of some sort.

Just keep doing what your doing and give it another month or so for the sand bed to get to kicking good. Small weekly water changes and use a good two part dose like b-ioninc to get that calcium back up and I think in a few months you will be a very happy camper...er keeper of water.

Well there two parts to the nitrate thing. Glad u mentioned the canister.
My main trate issue is from a dead unlocated goby...BUT
due to an old test kit (been rectified) Im not sure the were ever zero to begin with.
Im pretty sure im past the dead fish.<==famous last words.

On the canister subject. Origionaly the 3 components were
1. inserts that hold carbon
2. the blue fiber filter inserts
3. the rolling wheels on the outbound

I removed the blue fibery inserts under the impression that they are the 'nitrate factory' and just have the carbon and the rollers.
Now im thinking the rollers are actually the culprit and need to go as well
I'd just turn the canister offf but i get a little film that will form on the surface so i just keep running it

Mmm on the feeding issue you can try this.

Look for a glass jar of minced crabs. Usaly in with the tiny shrimp and canned meat section in stores. Take a small pinch of flake food, crumble it into a almost powder form and a few drops of the juice from the crab and mix. You could also use clam juice but be aware most clam juice has salt and/or seasonings in it so make sure it has none.

With all the pumps off use a turkey baster or straw and make a small "cloud" of the food just above the colony and let it sink onto the polyps.

Once the colony is kicking real well you can upgrade to super size feedings by buying a fresh frozen seafood mix in the meat/deli department. Pop it in a blender and puree it till its complet mush.

Divide it into small ziplocks and freeze it. Break off small peices as needed and mix with some tank water to thaw and feed the whole tank at once.

Ah ya that will do it on the nitrates. Unless you clean it every other day, and what a pain in the *** that is. With lots of LR and now a sand bed I would just leave the carbon in and keep it running. Makes a good place to put pads for removing phospahte or whatever.

Awsome color michael!

Well I removed the rollers so its just carbon, maybe that will do it
I missed the mark on my sandbed and came in at 3.5" so its a good chance it may never add any filtration. But its better than CC

But I have plenty of established LR so Im good there.
Tank is non drilled and all HOB and a doubt id ever go through incorporating a hob overflow/sump and start over larger.

Same with lights so ill stick with what i can with PC's

I may start the feeding with omnis recipe. (Thats cyclopeze stuff is outragous)

Eyeing the zoo section at LFS:bum: but maybe in a month.

Nice tank.;)

tulkas71,
I applaud your progress with your reef tank.
I only do this for people that are sincere and usually new to the hobby, but...

When you and your reef tank are ready, I will donate some coral frags to you. There are only a couple of catches, you have to take really good care of the corals I send you and you have to pay to have them shipped to you.

I am moving my reef into my new house in a week or so, after the fragging system is up and running, I will make some frags for you. So, by my estimates, you have until June/July to get your reef rocking. Are you ready?;)

Bill

Thanks. Great person Bill. What an insentive. I've seen a few posts with some of Bill's zoo's in them. Nice. I want to take a trip out to Long Island to see where you'se guys are getting those outragous looking zoo's. Mike

Mike,
It's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase! It took me a long time to get the zoas I have. Not by spending lots of money, but by watching and waiting. The best colors I picked up were from trades. Or by buying locally for little money.;)
