back from the dead button polyp (pics)

It just seemed the general concensus reading the fourms, and the premise made sense to me, plus I hated the look of that cyno covered CC

I also read the 'nitrate factory' theory on canister filter media.
I just hadnt thought about the rollers.(momentary lapse of reason)

Anthony, well met and welcome. It's funny how this hobby has changed so much in the last decade, yet some old methods are still emloyed. Before you know it, you're reef tank is gonna be something to marvel at! I've seen it so many times.;)

Damn you Mike! I wanted to do that!:sad1:

Anthony. Do you still have the 10gal. tank that you used to do you're sand swap with? You might wanna save it for a future project. Refugeum (forgot how to spell it, it's getting late) It'll do 3 things for you. 1: Grow micro algea to help keep nitrates down 2: With the overflow, it'll remove the skim off the top of you're water and 3: If you keep the lights on a reverse cycle, it'll help regulate you're PH. Did I say all that right Bill?

Yep! You're a master Mike.;)
Just be sure to use Chaetomorpha in your refugium. It's the least offensive of the macroalgaes and will grow like a weed. Just remember to harvest it every other month or so. I have to harvest mine yesterday...

heh I still have 2 (Gave the 3rd to a friend at works son for his birthday)
I really dont want to do a HOB overflow, Id rather save up and upgrade tanks and do the refrig and sump. but who knows when that willl happen. (Ivan+Katrina= I need new roof this year, lol)

Doh! Yeah, roofs are good at keeping you dry.;)

Well, buy a HOB overflow used. It'll be cheap. If you can get one free, even better. Ask around.
When you're ready, get that big tank with the overflows built in. You'll be glad you did it.

lol, I typo'd Birmingham in my profile. Fixed that! My friend calls it Burningspam
umm Mobile is like 5 hours so about that, maybe 6.
Ill look into a used hob overflow tommorow.

I see no reason to spend a lot of money on food when you can make it better yourself.

Hers my total recipe.

12 oz package of fresh/frozen seafood. It contains octupi, squid, shrimp, clams and whitefish.
1 clove of fresh garlic.
A handful of fresh garbonzo (chick peas) for greens. You could use suhi nori instead.

Blend it into a very fine mush. No peices bigger than about a number two pencil lead.
Divide it into zip lock freezer bags and lay them flat in the freezer.

Now for larger fish just dont puree it, blend till its still "chunky"
Make two bags of "chuncky" and the rest fine or whatever.

I also add a small pinch of omega one protein flakes and fresh nori every other feeding and feed every other day.

I have a 55 non drilled too. Eyeing a 125 reef ready tank....soon soon...the next tank will have a sump and refuge. Im like you I dont want a hang on overflow but a hang on refuge sounds ok.

Mmm alright.

I have a 55 that is set up to be a Zoa tank so I have been doing a lot of reading the past 3 months.

Basics:
55 gallon
60 pounds of live rock
100 pounds (about 5 inches) sand bed
260 watt PC coralife lights
Water turnover of about 650 gph (need to up this a bit)

One small 3 polyp zoa that is doing great and has budded.

So Im just getting started. Threads like this one I enjoy because you learn stuff.

I have been thinking of a refuge for this tank..the hang ons look good. The small one would probally not do much good but the 25 inch one on a 55 to 75 gallon tank would work.

Also been thinking of ways to do it myself with a rubbermaid tub and a small pump. Wouldnt take much to rig one up but it sure would be ugly...

If I do it, it will have to be HOB. So something 'nice' looking with little hassle is what im looking for.

Ill probably keep using my 55 for least another year so it should do fine.
Oddly enough it started life as my Ex's Turtle tank, so its pretty scratched up.

Thinking... just replace that canister filter with it.
That and I need to find a cheap "clip-on" flight fixture and a Lowes PC bulb or something?

Anthony, those HOB refugiums are decent and will get the job done for now. Do yourself a favor and try to buy one used. I always see them for sale.
