my nephew watched the house and tank for me and all I can say is the fish are still alive.all my millis ,deep water are gone because he unplugged the the cord for my power heads to plug in his lap top and never plugged the pumps back in. the pumps where off all week my apex told me the ph was low so I called and told him to dose the 2 part ,but with only the return pump over half my corals died.Just needed to vent

thanks Cris I know you would we also just found out my wifes lap top is broke he must have dropped it the screen is cracked and 2 keys are off.My sister inlaw called and asked when he should come over so we can pay him I dont know what to tell her

Sorry to hear, it sucks. I just went throught the same thing with my younger brother. I called everyday to check on things and he said everything was perfect. I get home after a week at the shore to find two dead fish and corals upside down on the sand. They are making a recovery so not as bad but dead fish sucks.:furious:

Reasons like these are why I have my tank as automated as possible- uneducated tank babysitters can do a lot of damage when being careless. Sorry to hear of your troubles.

Portray your concern for the laptop and the mishaps with the tank, and hope they don't ask for a payment. This type of situation can always make for bad blood though. Sorry for the predicament.

I honestly would have came over and done the tank sitting for free. Always willing to help out a friend.

i had my neighbors kid watch my tank while i was gone for 3 weeks, everythign was really already taken care of i have an automatic feeder and auto top off and such. all he really had to do was look at the tank and take care of my dog. but the second i drove up my driveway i knew something was wrong, he had somehow managed to crack the tank and it was about 4/5ths empty by the time i got there and all my corals were out of the water. i lost every coral had to redo my floor but miraculously all the fish lived! theres a plus side to everything.

I put an internet camera on it so I can check on it from work and make sure the fish are swimming and the levels are right in the sump. I check in every day. Human error is always my biggest fear on vacation, the apex does the rest.

you need to have a serious conversation with your sister in law.

Better yet, have your WIFE talk to her while you go downstairs and have a workout with the heavy bag!

Spinoleo-You are taking this very well(as I can only tell through RC) but I would be going Ape poop. IMHO- $0 should go to this young lad. Hope you can get things sorted out.

my wife has text my nephew a couple of times and he has not responded yet .We want to talk to him on the phone before talking to his mom he only ans my sons text when asked about the ph unplugged, but has not answered about the computer yet.

This doesn't help now, but depending on the length of vacation, I either hire a professional or just leave the tank unattended for the 2 or 3 days. In my case, for a weeks vacation, I hired my local profs at abcreefs.com to visit 2 times over 5 days to top off, change filter sock, clean skimmer and feed. The tank was fine and I felt at ease with the notion that someone trusted was looking after the tank. The tank is too valuable to leave to a novice.

Over a weekend, I prep the tank with a little extra water, leave the fish well fed, and hope that there isn't a power failure. I have a trusted neighbor, whom I could call.

I'm very sorry for your loss and family dilemma... Good luck Spinoleo

sorry about the tank. tank sitting stresses me out. i'd hate to be the non reefer ,trying to take care of a tank. i'm all for hiring a pro ,or having a reef wingman stop over.
