Back-ordered items not listed on website!

I placed an order for a Tunze Nanostrem 6025, a Maxijet 1200 and a magnet holder this weekend with MarineDepot.com under the assumption that all of the above products were in stock and would be shipped together on Monday. Well, we all know how assumptions usually go!

Today I received an email at 9:25PM stating that the Nanostream was out of stock and was back-ordered, to be shipped "usually within one week". Funny, it appeared to be in stock when I gave you my money!

As I requested in my long-winded and polite-for-the-circumstance email, please update your website IMMEDIATELY to reflect those products that ARE NOT IN STOCK. Your complete lack of respect for your (potential!) customers is utterly disgusting.

An extremely disappointed customer, who will be waiting for his order to ship "within one week",

Thank you for your order and inquiry. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We actually do let customer know the status of the products in their shopping cart. When you place an item in your shopping cart it will let you know if it ship out right away or if out of stock approximately how many weeks until it ships. In the case of the Nano Streams when you put them in your shopping cart, the following message is in your shopping cart:

I will keep your back order on order, but if you do happen to find the pump in stock at a different place feel free to call us or send an email asking to cancel the backorder and we can certainly do this for you.

Ah, thank you for pointing that out. I will certainly be extremely careful and read all of the fine print on your fine website before I place an order. Why accept orders such as mine, where an item is backordered and will have to be shipped separately at your cost? Certainly this drives the cost up for all other orders?

I am still of the opinion that a bigger (by text size or placement, perhaps right above the "Add to Shopping Basket" button?) attempt to notify customers of back-ordered goods is necessary. Although your method is certainly viable....

With that being said your order has been shipped with UPS tracking number 1ZE837720301896886 and is scheduled to arrive 2/05/07, you may track your package via www.UPS.com

or next time READ your shopping cart before hitting "place order" then you wont have to put MD on blast for your mistake....
 
I agree, Marine Depot has a different system than any other place online. Most other places say "pre-order" when they don't have it in stock. I don't think that it is too ethical to have "Add to Cart" on something that MD doesn't even have in stock regardless of whether the fine print says "ships in 6-8 weeks." If they can change when an item will ship, "usually ships in 6-8 weeks," on their website than they are more than capable of changing "add to cart" to "pre-order" or "item not in stock," or something of that manor. Needless to say I found their practice questionable and took my business elsewhere. For the Nano Streams try Premuim Aquadics, as they have a mailing list when the item does come in stock, or Reef Exotics.
