Backup battery question - AC3Pro

I installed the 9 Volt backup using a 9 volt battery & a phone plug.

I tested the backup to be sure it worked ( AC3Pro kept operating after unplugging main power supply from wall ).

Now after having the unit running for two months, I tested it again last night, and the 9VDC battery is dead.
However for the last two months, the power was never out.

How can the AC3Pro rundown a 9Volt battery when the power never went out?

It was a brand new battery.

There will be a bit of leakage current but I won't expect it to run down the battery. FYI, if the 9V battery had a higher voltage than the AC adapter, then the power would come from the battery until the battery voltage was below the AC adapter voltage.

Haved you verified that the battery is plugged into the 'backup' port and not the main? If you happen to switch ports then the AC3 would operate correctly, and appear to change over to battery when the other is unplugged but it would draw power from the battery until it was dead and then it would switch over to the AC transformer.

Just a though...
